elleries VL manual says to turn the auto trans handle sideways to lift off the console, but on 2 VL autos Ive tried, it wont turn at all, am I missing something?

Do you want to remove the shifter or the center console itself? The part with the numbers lifts up from the back(just stick your fingers under and lift), then the part around the shifter lifts from the front. Then to get the console out there are 3 screws in the rear tray, then the whole console will slide back from the clips and you will be able to remove it and see how the shifter comes out.

it seems the console wont lift off over the shifter handle unless the shifter top part is turned sideways and mine wont turn

I don't know if that thing turns or not, but I do know you can take the thing with the numbers on it out first, that spins around, you take that off sideways, and the console has a huge hole that comes off without the need for turning the shifter

PLEASE DON'T TURN THE SHIFTER HANDLE!! It will come off alright, but for good LOL. Take the black piece out first (with the numbers on it) then the piece that the black bit sits in.

Take out the black piece with numbers on it, then the piece surrounding the shifter, pry it out, and there are two little clip things infront of it (at the back in the tray) if you look closely. Then lift and TURN THIS not the shifter. Then the 3 screws in the rear part you put things in under the mat. Slide it backwards toward the rear of the car. And lift, from memory there are a few wires hanging around from the shifter so be carefull. Oh and remove the hand brake cover as well.
