Howdy all,
Just wondering if anyone could help me solve this problem. In the mornings or whenever my car is cold i cant reverse at all it just revs and i dont move anywhere, i have to get one leg out and try push it, its really annoying especially if im on a bit of a hill. I went to a mechanic and he said it happens in alot of old cars but said theres nothing really that can be done. Please dont tell me this is true.
Auto yes?
Check the trans fluid, when it gets low on old cars it can cause the gearbox to miss shifting into gear.
Hope this helps.
Gearbox on the way out.Next thing you will notice will be no going into 4th..
the fluid is full so i know its not that, i hope i dont need a new gearbox i cant afford it, the mechanic said something about a rubber, takes longer to heat up or something along those lines??
That sound like something dodgy. I hate to say it but its most likley that the gearbox is on its last legs. Not sure of a price on a reco one but it wont be nice. Best to go to a wrecker if you want the cheap option.Originally Posted by ViciousLady

not dodgy. just worn out bands. chances are when the guy said the bands are slipping because its cold and someone with little knowledge made the connection with rubber bands. its been done before!Originally Posted by slundy
when bands slip they can be tightened, but not usually going to last long even with that. they do grip better when warm so it would make sence.
afraid its probably a matter of a replacement box. reco between $600 and $1000 and second-hand from wreckers usually around $250.
Cheers for clearing that up.Originally Posted by vlv8vic
all sorts of strange auto trans problems can be caused by the fluid level being too high
first thing is to check the auto trans fluid level when the car is warmed up, shouldnt be too low or too full
Try this .
When you park the car at home........ reverse it into the drive way.
That way in the morning you can drive it in forward till it warms up.
Hey it certainly wont fix yor problem but while your gearbox still is working ( which wont be much longer!!!)it will eliminate the hassle of trying to push the car.
This does not change the fact that the box sounds like it is about to die... so in the mean time start saving up!
Had same drama with mine and to lengthen the life of gearbox and lack of time and facilities to do it properly did this.....
Buy 4 or 5 litres of tranny fluid and read the max ellery w/shop manual section in "to flush transmission cooler". Dont overfill at end of this operation and steady as she goes. So far mine hasnt repeated the reverse play up since and the shift changes are sharper no doubt due to the fresh fluid.
Hope it works for you too.![]()

ok thanks guys i'll try some of the tricks you told me. its just so annoying especially with winter coming on. if i turn the car off and leave it for a little bit i know i'll have to wait for it to kick in or if im lucky enough to be on a bit of a hill its cool i can just roll. well thanks again![]()
HI Could you please scan and post that part 4 those who dont have a M/E workshop manual....Originally Posted by groucho

if you are going to scan make sure its via pm, dont post it in a public section. copyright etc etc. blah blah blah......
I have a VL auto box. $50 if you want it, but I'm in Melbourne.
There are plenty of VL auto boxes around, try calaisturbo.com.au people sell them there everynow and again.
why don't you try and park so that you don't have to start the morning by reversing? (just a thought, may not be possible)
Yeah sounds like the gearbox, i watched my mates vl last winter when trying to take off, was a bit funny to watch...Hearing the engine rev high but only very slowly moving, but was also affected in first. Just needed to be warmed up, but was quite laggy.
Got it converted to manual only a couple of weeks ago, it was pretty much only the gearstick thing holding the gearbox in, apparently there was four bolts missing from bottom of the auto gearbox.
So they used it for about 10 months with a stuffed gearbox, urs might hold on longer![]()
