does anyone know the differences between the manual gearboxes from the RB20DET, RB25DET, RB30E and RB30ET. Specifically the differences between the rb30 and rb30et, and also the rb20det. gear ratios would be good too. it's just it turns out my gearbox is a rb20det. SUPPOSEDLY they are all the same except for the rb30et which is MEANT to be stronger. and also the rb20det's 5th gear is meant to be taller. I think the rb20det will handle my N/A rb30 motor but wondering if it will handle the turbo when it goes on. Supposedly it can't handle the extra torque of the rb30. any ideas would be great as i don't want to waste my time puting in a box if it can't handle the power.
well i've found out that the gear ratio's of a rb20det and rb30e are identical. but the rb30et are diffferent.strength is the other issue, the rb20det sit behind a 160kw engine and the rb30et box sits behind 150kw but the RB30ET has more torque. now the gear ratios have me thinking as i'm puting a diff in with 4.11 gears which is what the r32 rb20det's have but i've got more torque to get me moving.
RB20DET & RB30E gear ratios
1 - 3.321
2 - 1.902
3 - 1.308
4 - 1.000
5 - 0.759
RB30ET gear ratios
1 - 3.580
2 - 2.077
3 - 1.360
4 - 1.000
5 - 0.760
remember a rb30et diff ratio is 3.45 (i think) and mine will be 4.11 how will my car go in comparison and do you think the RB20DET box is as strong as a MX7?
does this sound right:- I should get more speed through the first few gears with the rb20det box over the rb30et box, and better acceleration with the 4.11 diff over the 3.45 ratio but less top end due to the diff ratio (as gearbox gear ratio's are the same for 4th and 5th). So hypothetically if i raced someone with identical engines, but the different box and diff ratio's, i should flog him until we hit 4th gear where my diff ratio stuffs me. ie 1/4 mile i'd win but street race i'd lose in the top end.
Does this sound right????????
well i've found out that the rb20det box should be as strong as the rb30et box whilst having the rb30e gear ratio. which is fine by me as it gives me quicker acceleration down low and better fuel economy on the highway over my jatco.
thanx for all your help people![]()
so what would be quicker?
rb20det box with 3:45 gears or a rb30et box with 4:11 gears?
coz the ratios are difrant in teh boxes, would it even them out coz the diffs???
and sorry but brain dead but what model skyline had the rb20 in? was it the r32

yes the r32. it'll be quicker acceleration with the 4.11 but not as much top speed and it won't be evened out by the diff, it'll make it quicker again. i should still be able to get over 200km/hr though. it's just i'll get there a hell of a lot quicker.Originally Posted by VL Berlina 5speed
so the gear box wont make that much diffrance in teh total speedOriginally Posted by bangers

top speed only comes down to diff ratio as the 4th and 5th gear in the two boxes are the same. so in answer to your question..... quicker as in top speed is the 3.45 ratio while quicker in acceleration is the 4.11 ratio
