Hi guys I'm about to do the Auto to manual conversion but I am wondering aboput diff ratios. Could anyone please advise the best ratios for my diff which is a standard diff for the VL Auto 3.08. Would I need a better diff ratio if so what is best for a standard VL?
I got no idea mate, but I'm a big manual fan also, and yes I too have an auto VL. My uncle, a mechanic of 30+ years reckons that a manual conversion for a VL is a real pain-in-the-arse job...
Are you 100% getting it done? if so, was the person doing it for you reluctant to take up the job?
Depends on what you want ur car to do!Originally Posted by NeilB

I was confused now I'm just not so sure!!
RIP Peter (perfect) Brock....
the diff ratio for a N/A auto and a N/A manual are the same. do the gearbox swap first then worry about diff ratios.
can I humbly suggest buying a VL manual and selling your car, lots cheaper and easier
also if yours is a 6 cyl I think the computer is different
the auto can be driven like a manual by holding it in the different gears, anyhow
these altered cars arent easy to eventually sell either
Thanks for the comments guy's but as for selling it NO WAY! I don't mind a bit of mucking around to put it in (it's going into Dazza's car he's my son) the amount of sound gear Etc it would be more mucking around to move it than the gearbox. The reason for the swap is the Auto's had it and we got hold of the Manual at a good price. We intend doing it ourselves. Should be fun?
You wont need to touch the computer if going from Auto to Manual, it is only if you go from Manual to Auto.
If it does have 3.08 gears, try to get some 3.45 gears for it.

sweet ride. i wouldn't sell it either. it's not a hard conversion. just make sure you get the flywheel and backing plate. master and slave cyl's and hose. pedal box. gear knob surround plate and retaining ring for the shifter sock. also the plate under the centre console is different too i think. crossmember and tailshaft. etc etc. have fun, it shouldn't take more than a day. let us know how you go.![]()
Nice ride indeed....
Mmmmm, too bad mine looks like it has been stolen from a backstreet in Balga..![]()
i have a heap of 5 speed conversion bit for sale if your interested.
cheers
not sure if we got all that lol, we'll see how we go with it, i get the feeling its gunna be off the road for a while, things dont happen quick around here. does any1 know if we can get the tailshaft shortened to the right size?Originally Posted by bangers

i thought the only difrance was the inside of the yoke, the manual one is finer with more teeth and the auto was bigger with lease teeth,
but when my cosin did a vn v6 to vk swap he need a tailshaft shortend and i think he got it done at repco for something like 60 bucks or so, including balencing. just need to suply the two tailshafts

Your right. Only the yokes are different.
oh ok so the yoke is different. can u modify the auto yoke or i gotta go get a manual one? forgive me, im not real familiar with all this, only a rookie with cars![]()
As far as I know its just a matter of getting the old yoke off the auto one and buying a new yoke for the Manual and away you go
If not I'd be heading to a wreckers and getting a tailshaft, I'm still deciding on what option I'm taking.
when i got my box i just grabbed the tailshaft too. gives me a chance to get new uni's and centre bearing fitted before i do the swap.
yeh well the guy i got this off has already got the tailshaft modify'd for his 5.0L eng n gearbox combo ... aparently
ok once i get this yoke, i will have the 5speed box, crossmember, clutch master cyl, pedal box. am i goin to need any other essentials?![]()
slave cylinder. the plastic part for the centre console. the metal plate for under the centre console. clutch kit. flywheel. backing plate for flywheel.
Pressure plate aswell.
Good luck finding the center manual surround thats difficult.
The metal place for under the console, I don't have that, I may have to fabricate something. Who can take a picture as I can't remember what it looks like.
here's one from ebay thats already sold. also bax the pressure plate is in the clutch kit with the thrust bearing. you need to buy the spigot bush separate, the part number is PB22. clutch kit is NSK-3028 from memory. thats exedy-daikin numbers.

Spigot bush is something that I need to get. Everything else I should have, how much did that sell on ebay, I'd love to get my hands on something like that, keeps the road noise down.
correction... NSK-6308 for N/A and NSK-6333 for turbo. I also just found a cheaper alternative to the plate, Redline P/number 36-100. $22.99. They are replacement concertina boot and plate for older cars without centre console. you bend the plate over the tunnel and screw it down. effectively cutting road noise. i'm just going to do that. you can't see it with the console over it.
L'il One Blue from here sold it for $79 plus postage from memory.Originally Posted by Bax
