I recently bought myself a VL Berlina 1987 ( not sure its a real berlina?)
these are the items I question being on a berlina:
manual mirrors
drum rear brakes
wind up windows
no cruise control
either way I dont really mind, it's white ( all colour coded bumpers ) dark tint, low, VZ ss 17's and duel fuel. looks neat and goes well, bar the problem below
in regards to my forum title:
the car runs fine on gas, better than petrol actually. When its on petrol, its hard to start, bairly idle's an when you press the accelerator it coughs and splutters, occasionally backfiring until it gets up to around 2500-3000rpm then it runs normally but still sounds as though its got a miss??
my current thought was dirty injectors? so I'm running a tank of Shell Optimax through it with a fuel injector cleaner additive as well and hoping for the best?
any other thoughts or suggestions are welcomed
thanks

if u wanted power mirrors windows and crusie stock then its the calasi the berlina was just giving ppl the chance to have the option of them but not at the full price of calais
as for the running ruff, it could b many things most comen things are that the temp senor can be making it run rich or lean, the AFM (air flow meter) could be off, ment to be set at 382hms to run at factory specs if higher runs rich low runs lean, o2 sensor could be off making it runn richer as its clocged up or caked in carbon deposites or something simple as the timing is out
BUT
im not sure with gas systems and if they have to be tuned in conjunction with the petrol system so best bet is seeing a machnic of some sort or hopefully some fellow jc member is wiser then me with gas systems

Well I know it's not an ignition problem because gas is harder than petrol to ignite!!Originally Posted by abcent
So the problem is the petrol side and could be many things, so if you still want to run on petrol get your self a workshop manual and start checking.
Air flow meter is a good place to start...![]()
I was confused now I'm just not so sure!!
RIP Peter (perfect) Brock....
welcome
if its a 6, to start from cold on petrol, turn on ign and wait until fuel pumps go quiet, then leaving foot off the accelerator pedal, it should start first time and run properly
do you smell fuel? like when trying to start or at idle? Sounds like a leak in the fuel system or a blockage in the fuel system. with the car running look under the bonnet at the injectors for any visable leaks. This happened to mine after one of my leads died that cylinder wasn't firing and the injector was blocked/died. replaced with a 2nd hand one and it started leaking after a couple of days. All sorted now tho.
Also don't degrease the engine!!!! I did this and it killed the injector because the water tight seals have long since perished. This also happened to my1stvl.
yeh stay away from washing it lol happened to me twice lmao anbd yer my berlina is same has shit all options lol

lol.....so my berlina is basically a pov pack executive with flasher door trims and a rear seat arm rest....lol...cool
thanks for all the replies so far, plenty of ideas. There's no fuel smell present at all. It could be the afm as when I adjust it, it makes no difference untill its nearly screwed all the way in an starts to die, from there i turned it half a screw at a time and still the whole way it coughed and spluttered at soon as i touched the accelorator cable. The O2 sensor looks reasonably new as it has extractors on it an may have been replaced whenever that was done?
with the afm needing to be at 382hms as per factory settings...what does this mean? I have a pretty good AWB multimeter so I can do this myself, but not sure where the hms setting would be? and do I back probe both outer wires to get this measurement? or is it one of the other 3 wires in the middle?
hopefully by doing this I can elliminate or blame the afm![]()
on the plug for the afm there is a rubber cover covering the cables, pull taht bak and put the probs in to the pins 1 and 6, both end cablesOriginally Posted by abcent
make sure the car is turnd off when doing this
and simply turn the screw till you get 382ohms
if u get negative on you mulitmeter jsuit simple swap the probes around

i figure after today that it is just the injectors being dirty or a bit clogged up.
tested the afm today....seems to work fine, felt the fuel pump whilst the coughing an splattering was going on...so surging or anything going on there so it's fine.
then i blocked of the fuel reg return line (raising the fuel pressure) and the car seems to run ok....like it does in higher rpm ranges. so as mentioned in my first post im running a tank of optimax through it with now 2 injector cleaner additives in the tank and hope it comes good. Next tank if showing no improvement I'll add a litre of metholated spirits (great fuel system cleaner) to the tank. if no better then....i'll get em cleaned professionally.
