recently I saw a VL wagon with lots of blisters in the paintwork around the back window which as we all know means lots of rust around there
hard to know how to prevent this common VL problem, the rust
starts in the metal to which the front and rear window glass is attached with glue
its said that holdens left this as bare metal on the assembly line. I doubt that much could be done without removing the glass, some fish oil put into the rust blisters would slow the rust down a bit
a non rusted tailgate would be an option for the wagon, come to think of it, if any can be had
are there any anti rust things that might seep in and cover the metal under the screen?
It's not bare metal as far as I've seen, just a matter of the seals not sealing the way they should. Water gets in, doesn't dry out and it sits there and slowly starts rusting away, once it gets through the paint your screwed.
You can buy thick paste type compounds that you can smear on, but I'd recommend taking the glass out, taking the seals off, grinding/cutting the rust out, replacing with a new piece and fish oiling, and sealing with primer.
Then sealing with effective window seals instead of standard.
You could try using a Rust Converter product if you have rust, works a treat. Its thin too so you could seep it into the cracks..
rust arround the front and back windows is a common thing.. my dad owned 2 vl turbos back in 1992 and 1993.. alot of them were already rusting arround then, so no doubt about it, alot of them are worse now.. even wen i started looking for mine, i saw that quiet alot of them had rust arround the front and back windows.. some of them even had some arround the engine bay.. i was lucky with mine, i only have the slightest bit of rust near the back window on the back right up the top of the pillar (its only bout 1 inche square) which shouldnt be too much hassle to get rid of![]()
it is a great product, so fast and easy to use. alsp primes as you go. Ive tried it on my little rust blisters and it seals for a while then opens up again. i think the fact that it never really dries out in the rust holes has something to do with it. good in theory, no so good in practice.Originally Posted by femno
Get some PENETROL from the hardware shop. It seals and converts the rust. Wont fix the problem but will really slow it down.
Who make the Rust Converter product? I have a very small bit of rust on the Vn rear window to fix.
I'd suggest if you are serious about fixing it then get a professional to look at it instead of using a rust converter. It doesn't do a complete job. you really need to have the infected area removed and replaced. and if anyone suggests cutting and bogging you need shooting. that is disrespect for your car.
yah as it also makes the car structualy less strong, there for more dangeruos to you and other road users.Originally Posted by tigga17

hrrmm im pretty sure when our vl went through regency they were fine with it?? we done a real dodgy repair of it, we used silicone and then sprayed a light coat of paint over it to make it look a bit better for regency, as it was quite bad around the front window. i have to check on the papers but im sure regency were ok about it. i might be wrong but...
regency
when i got mine it had a little rust on the back window and it was fine for RWC.
Road Tripping
well i got defected for every tiny spot of rust on the car even a bit the size of a 50 cent piece in the boot beside the rubber seal

my old man purchased a special edition v8 straight off the line treated it like it was made of gold ... always garaged and such less than 5 years later rust appeared impossible to stop as its like a drainpipe gutter with no way to get the water out ... i doubt its bare metal probably just evident that the windscreens were never properly sealed im doin up my vl lifted the rubbers and saw a mess ...gonna see if i can avoid removing the windscreen it might have to come out ... not rusted through the top just under ...please god lol let it be easily repairedha
thanks dan
Its Stock And it Rocks .... ditch the bitch lets go racing
The old HK's had this tar crap around the windows that is invincible against water and rust and really really anoying to try and remove when rebuilding one!. I suggest fixing any rust that is there then finding some HK spec tar to put under the seal
Also If you don't fix rust around windows like this almost as soon as you see it, you might as well get mentaly prepared to say goodbye to your car, because it will be 100 times worse under the seal and will will take your car out sooner than later
That tar crap is Mastic SEALER (skinning type) but it's good stuff..Originally Posted by greenfoam
