a mate at work just got given a Calais LE V8. the motor is blown but he is going to put a stroker on gas in it and he wants to swap it for my NA 6cyl. He said i can take the body kit off mine too and put it on the calais. the only thing i'll have to do is the suspension again. and he's going to put extractors and zorst on the calais too. the calais is supposedly straight as and has only done 130k kms. should i do the swap? i'm just worried about insurance and other running costs. i suppose fuel will be a little cheaper on gas though. the car is white and silver too so my body kit should match up. sounds to good to be true but he just wants a run around as he is doing a 572 stroked monaro and doesn't need another V8. i love the vl i have though, should i swap? oh yeah he is also puting a turbo 500 in it.
check the car out first obviously, but as you said, it comes down to if you want an 8 or not.
if it is coming with a fresh motor then it does sound tempting
What is a turbo 500?
i think that was the 5 speed box he was puting in it. i'm not sure on that actually. i was pretty busy when he mentioned it.
i thought the t500 was the 4 speed auto they used behind the earlier injected 5litres....
^^^ yeh thats what i thought. i think the old 308's n stuff had a t350 or sumthing didnt they?
i love V8's BUT .... i wouldnt ever trade my car. too attached to it, would kill me to see sombody else drivin it
I've been thinking about the swap. i have a spare motor and a 5 speed box here and i'm thinking of offering to him to turbo the motor and put my box in and swapping my NA executive for his then turbo'd 5 speed calais instead of a V8 5 speed on gas. what do you all think? should i put it to him? it will still cost about the same for him to build either motor and i can pay whatever extra for more performance parts. it'll save me having to upgrade my diff and brakes, and do my interior and turbo my car.
problem aint the stroker carby? if it is then it will not a have all the fuel lines need for a efi set up and the wireing harness is proberly diffrant
if i was u i would take the calais coz if u think about it the calais is double the value of urs (stock), then its stroked = more $$$$ and bonus its on gas so will save money,
then the idea of u giving him a motor to put in, will the 6 go in easyly coz hassles of fuel lines and loom, do u wanna spend the time and extra money to do that and then tune it all
its in ur hands from here
(ps: u got his moblie number so i can give him a call, lol jkz)

very good point. thanx. well how much juice will a 355 stroker drink in comparison to a NA 6 cyl and how much is gas at the moment. also a guy at work today said a V8 on gas is shite in way of performance. i spose the stroker will make up for it though.
the stroker will chew a fair ammount of juice, on gas it'll probably cost you the same to run as your current vl.
i'm starting to think i will go the swap. some people have told me to stay with the RB30 for the reliability but meh, i learnt to drive in V8s and i love strokers. i want something to beat my cousins VP supercharged clubsport. I should do it with ease in this car. I'm still curious as to whether the gas will cause power loss.
most cars on gas can be just as quick as the petrol powered ones, provided the motor is tuned correctly for gas, it'll be a rocket
the guy at work must have driven a shite one. mine flies.Originally Posted by bangers

it'll be gas only.
he's decided to go a 304 stroked to 340 with VN heads. he doesn't know if he's going to swap now due too wife problems, he may now need the car incase she takes the BMW. d'oh
women!
Cant live with them, cant have hetrosexual sex without them!
i wish he'd make up his mind. he is now going 355 with HDT heads, stage 6 cam and T5 box. sounds good. he is still reasonably keen to swap. but understandably he has other issues on his mind.
looks like its going to go ahead. i'll keep the spare motor and 5 speed for a future VL wagon. So i'll have a stroked V8 calais and a turbo'd wagon. with the calais it will have a 253 blue motor crank which has more nickel in it so will be almost as good as a steel crank. with 253 counter weights to allow it to spin up quicker. the crank will be ground 100 thou and have 327 chev pistons and rods fitted which will bring the engine upto 340 capacity. unknown still which heads will be fitted, either HDT or VN, with solid cam and a fair bit of lift. this thing should be a rocket and will have a 5 speed fitted still. i think i'll go the swap![]()
he's puting HDT heads on and running 500 thou lift.
sounds like a weapon, hope all goes well mate![]()
he said he wants mine to give to his son when he gets his license.
This does sound like a weapon, BUT...........
Gas reaserch do some killer gas only carbs, good for reasonable H.P. !
500 th lift could be a problem when it comes to setup with the gas, dont honestly know..........
When are you going to get a chance to put money aside for V8 rego....when your going through tyres and diffs like there's no tomorrow???
Holden used the evr popular Powerglide 2sp auto, with a variety of ratios and clutch sets depending on the engine it was behind...........
They then went for the TH400, 3 spd strong, hard to kill, rebuilt properly these can handle 4 figure H.P..........
Then came the TH350, very similar to the 400, different ratios.........
Last of the TH slushers was the 700, these are the 4spd boxes in VNs.
Good Luck with whatever you do !!!![]()
I'm not a hoon so tyres and diffs aren't an issue. And the guy builing the motor has built heaps of cars and never busted one from having the wrong box or diff combo. I'll make my final decision when i see the car and drive it though.
