Default VL locks easy to open with other keys

its said that as the keys and locks wear, almost any VL key will work on any other VL
Ive tried my VL key on 2 other VLs so far, with 1, it opened the door and worked the ignition lock
with the other, it opened the door and I expect would have started the car

presumably the car thieves know this, and its partly why so many VLs are stolen or have stuff stolen from them
getting another type of lock fitted is possible, the name of them escapes me at the moment

I have a case hardened chain attached to the floor which is locked to the steering wheel rim with a padlock, long handled bolt cutters would be needed

every commodore ive owned has had problems with things relating to keys... ignition, door locks, boot etc. on all of em you've been able to remove the key from the ignition when cars started and running.. and a couple you've been able to open the doors with other keys or a screwdriver!!! its a common problem with the older commos. i myself have never used or had solex or similar locks but with my old cars i replaced all the door locks ( and boot lock ) with new ones from holden and they came with new ( same code, so one key for all ) keys. made em that bit safer

Keep in mind, were not just talking VLs here......anything from about HQ through to VL has similar shape key. I gave my sister a scare one day, by opening and starting her HZ with my original VL key !

ALSO, in QLD.......if you can remove your keys from the ignition whilst in the "on" position, the cops will get you to lock your vehicle up on the side of the road, with a do not drive order !

Sisters HZ, bro in laws HX, and my VL have all had new locks and barrels fitted, those lovly round "clublock" style keys.

Ok i dont understand that QLD law...in fact I think the law stands everywhere, including SA (same law that makes remote start illegal).

Because doesnt every VL do that? Mine did, my dads old VL, all my m8's with VL's. They all let u take the key out without stopping the car.

How often do people open a vr/vs with a key, its done most of the time by remote?

my old vh was the only one ( until someone tried steeling it and stuffed the ignition barrel ) you couldnt take the key out of the ignition whilst "on". my old vl formula on the other hand, if ya took a corner too fast the key would fly out of the ignition and onto the floor!!!

solar locks don't work people just get keys for them, You need a alarm systems, I've got the Viper alarm system, You can't just have normal locks for the VL.. To to to risky.

Apparently potato's can get around solex locks, and if they aren't installed properly they can twist out just as easily as a normal lock. Some people say they aren't worth the money.

I relise that its not a QLD only law, its just hard to know where and when, because this place we all call home ( Australia ) operates more like 7 countries on one continent. If road ( and other ) laws were the same Aust. wide, life would be so much easier for everybody!

In regaurd to the potato thing, if people want something bad enough.....they'll get it no matter what !!!

Yea my VN lets me pull the key out of the ignition with it running. It still doesn't start with other VN keys though.

both my VK & my VL couldnt remove keys, nor open the locks with others, but Ive used my keys on other peoples without problems.....

& this one time, a forum member MSN'd me asking to bring my keys to his house...... hhmmm ask where his keys were ???? drivers seat

Yay for VL's dodgey locks I had to destroy the locks to get into my VK Calais

My key opens and starts a friends VH And Vice Versa. He thought it would be funny to open my car and put his steering lock around my pedals so i couldnt drive the car.

I found it funny to open his car, get inside it, turn it on and threaten to drive away.

I had my car opened by somebody with a Commodore Key.

They stole my melways and HRT Flag....Oh, and they rolled it down the hill about 10 metres.

So i got some Solex locks, havent had an issue since....but then again, its only an NA

This isn't really realting to anything, but are "clublocks" or steering wheel locks easy to get off? I recently purchased one. It was around $60 and i'm scared my car is going to get stolen. My car is in original codition. No cd player etc, has nothing to offer anybody but a quick ride.
