My VL has been running quite nicely until tonight when I parked it for about 30 mins and now it simply wont turn over. It hasn't had any starting problems of late, all other electrics seem to come on when I turn the key, is this likely to be the crank angle sensor failing? How much should I be expecting to pay to get it fixed?
right, tell me, do you have spark? do you have fuel? check those things for me, and get back to me, it could be a few things, we will start with the obvious first
cheers

i had the same problem with one of my vl's.......sometimes its the plug not the sensor. try moving the wires/wobbling the plug and see if it works then
Click the scales.....you know you want to!!!!
Merry Christmas to all, or so I thought.
I parked my car in the garage last night, it's been running mint of late. I needed to go out a short time ago, so started my car and then ran back inside to get somthing i had forgotten. The car had started fine and was running normally, so it was a great suprise to me when I walked back into the garage to hear the car run rough, then die.
It turns over, and thats all it does. Not the slightest fire. I pulled a plug out (number 1) and it was wet, and sparked fine so fuel and spark are not an issue. I had problems in the past with the plug on my airflow sensor so I took an hour just now to re-wire it, but its made no difference. There are no vaccum leaks or anything. Somone please help!

I should add that with the ignition on, the ECU displays fault code 12, which points to the air flow meter, but a new one of those is $300 so if theres a way round it i'd like to know.

Jet' my freind, as I've metioned to afew others in here, find yourself a Reliable Holden/Commie wreaker. You'll save yourself a fortune. Also, get it checked by autosparky/ mechanic first
Good Luck !!!
Did you get going in the end yogorilla?

there is a box/sensor near the aircleaner box, remove the round black plug and adjust the flat screwdriver set screw in or out as i did and got it down to 650rpm with auto and no hunting in gear, may have to lift throttle stop up a smidge though. may not be correct method but it ran very smooth and changed almost un-noticably. help, this not my doing, will adding morey's to efi fuel block injectors enough to stall and not start. no adjust even got a burp out of it, has out of fuel feeling, ANYBODY PLEASE jimrichards1964@westnet.com.au 089 3617961, jimrichards1964@hotmail.com, if out of state reverse charge please, but state commodore to phone not your name when prompted please
my problem too HELP ME PLEASE!Originally Posted by jetspin_vl

Timing light on no. 1 lead - move it back from other leads so get clearer signal.
Start the engine and watch the light hit the notches on the crank. Should be 2.3 notches at 700rpm. Sit rpm on 2700rpm (I use broomstick from throt to seat). Watch the notches in relation to timing mark - as engine heats up (first mark on temp guage) at 2700rpm (5minutes) watch for misses on timing light - watch for retarding timing for no reason. Cost is a few bucks in fuel and a timing light (which anyone with a twenty year old car may find useful)
i dont think 3 posts have ever done my head in so much in my life Jim, i read them 3 times over and nearly fell off table.
Why did you rehash a thread 18months old... start a new one, everyone will get confused and try to help you and Jetspin even though he posted in this in Jan 04.
1. The thing you are adjusting is the Air Flow/mass meter, its set to a specific voltage for the ECU, its not the air idle speed setting to change idle RPM so you will need a multimeter to set it back to 3.6-4V
2. Try checking fuel rail for fuel and hold No1 lead 5mm from strut tower bolt on suspension and see if you have spark.
3. Check for codes on ECU by setting to diagnostic mode, clear codes and then see if one comes back up. Tell us if any codes come up.
4. Wiggle each wire one by one and try to start car in between.
5. Remove dizzy cap and check for moisture, then remove bolt on rotor buton and remove black plate underneath inside dizzy and look around for any orange dust or crap on the metal shinny disc looking plate.
Lastly but not least, please take the time to post in full sentences as if you were talking to us, will make it easier to read please m8.
If you want more inches, STROKE IT!
Hey Jim
Maybe your cleaning lifted scum and bloked the filter - 12 bucks for a new one and if doesn't fix you've done some maintenance

IF WIGGLING CRANK ANGLE WHATSIT DONT WORK, CHECK OUT THE NASTY LITTLE BUGGER OF A RELAY BEHIND BATTERY THAT CONTROLLS POWER/SIGNAL TO INJECTORS, IT IS THE 5 PIN ONE AND BATTERY FUMES CORRODE THE GUTS, FOR TWO WEEKS AND AFTER BURNING OUT TWO STARTERS I FOUNF THE CROOK RELAY CHANGED IT AND VROOM STRAIGHT AWAY. MAKE SURE ITS THE ONE THE IS AT REST ON 87A NOT 87. POWER IN AT 30 AND THE LAST ONE IS EARTH/BROWN PR REVERSE POLARITY RELAY/TRIGGER. I HOPE THATS THE PROB BECASE I STRIPPED MY ANGLE SENSOR AND APART FROM A SLIGHTLY LOOSE MAGNET, NOTHING CAN REALLY GO WRONG EXCEPT DIRTY CONTACTS AND DEAD RELAYS, IDLING DONE AT BACK OF INTAKE MANIFOLD WITH THE LARGE PHILIPS SET SCREW, NOT NOT NOT THE THE THROTTLE STOP, NEED SHORT SCREWDRIVER, WIND ANTI CLOCK FOR UP AND CLOCKWISE FOR SLOWER, THEN ADJUST THE AIRFLOW SENSOR TO SMOOTH IT ALL OUT AND STOP HUNTING, IF HESITATING OFF THE LINE ADJUST THROTTLE POSI SENSOR A LITTLE ADVANCED OR TOWARDS THE DRIVERS SIDE AS YOU SORT OF LIFT ROTATE IT! GOOD LUCK I HOPE MY BLEEDING KNUCKLES AND SWEARING AND BLOWN STARTERS AND NEIGHBOURS THREATENING TO RING FUNNY FARM HELPS YOU OUT. GOOD LUCK JIMRICHARDS1964@WESTNET.COM.AU
FIRST TIME I POSTED THIS AS ONLY HAD CAR THREE WEEKS, HOPING SOME OTHER JIM YOU REFERING TO, I KNOW THE AIRFLOW IS NOT FOR IDLE, IT IT GIVE CORRECT INFO TO COMP SO IT CAN ADJUST INJECTOR TIMING, OPENING, SO AS NOT TO RICH LEAN. I ONLY ADJUSTED IT BACK TO BOOK STATS AT A SETTING OF 4.2 VDC TO GET CLEAN RUNNING, YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT SOME COWBOY IDIOT HAD DONE TO THIS CAR, NOTHING MATCHED THE SCHEMATICS, SO I HAD TO REDO ALL THE FUSE BOX, ALL THE CONNECTORS, FOUND A LEAKING INJ ETC, THER USED ORANGE OR RED FOR GROUND AND WASHINH MACHINE HARNESS WIRES TO HOOK UP REVERSE POLARITY RELAY AND DIODE AS WAS ALL THE OTHER SENSORS THERMAL SWITCHES. I JUST THOUGHT THAT SINSE SO MANY PEOPLE WERE HAVING GETTING GOING PROBS I WOULD TELL THEM WHAT STOPPED MINE COLD CROSSING THE FREEWAY. UM WHO DOES CHIP UPGRADES, JIMRICHARDS1964@HOTMAIL.COM Any links appreciated. have a good one and good luck with it all, i only answer questions i know, if i click on wrong thing and it comes up as new thread sorry, my dogs fault she is teaching me all his stuff, pc's new to meOriginally Posted by Bucket
had heaps spark, new dizzy cap, no dirt under disk, what do i click on to start new thread because i click on it and end up on someone elses post, not very good a navigating this site sorry for the frustration caused, every told me crank angle sensor, i know what it controlls, my prob was no power to inj's. i would of managed fine without this great site if not for the cowboy who thought he was helping out previose owner, again my appologies
ive got a vl commodore and lately its been doing strange things. while im driving ill lose power , where the engine would still be running but i wont be able to accelerate so i usually have to pull over and restart the engine. other times if i lose power it kicks back in after a short period of time if i havnt pulled over.
also other times if this happens, the engine cuts out and ill have to restart. its a toughy, ive had it in auto electrcians for 2 days and they couldnt fault find it cause it happened too quick for them to diagnose then they wanted to do trial and error but i fugured that would of been a quite hefty bill by the time they had faulted it. if anyone has a possible solution id be interested to know some. im going to give the crank angle sensor a go if that doesnt fix the problem im hopeing i dont have to replace the comp.
talk about digging up an old thread
check for fault codes on your computer like goon said if you havnt already
