Default are vn fuel pumps the same as vl

i want to know if a vn fuel pump will fit a vl the reason i want to know this is i have one kicking around so if it does fit it will save me some cash...

well any way i think my fuel pump is on its way out. some one herre should be able to help me, just the other day i was driving doing bout 100-110 and my car just died so i pulled over an tried to start it again and Nothing it didnt want to fire i left it for about 10-20 min then it started like normal. i got roughly 10 min down the road and it did it again. I did the same procedure an of I went. I ended up filling the tank and it went fine for a couple of days until it got down to ½-¼ of a tank then it did it again.. What could this be?? First I changed fuel filter an it wasn’t that… I’m not sure how the pick up works but when it gets to about ¼ of a tank you some times here it sucking like when your all most empty but this only happens every now and then. that’s made me think if the pick up has moved and its not sucking from the bottom of the tank as well as ive ran it low on fuel before and maybe its picked up some crap from the bottom of the tank .It doesn’t take long for my car to stop like its sure to do it after you’ve been driving for 5-10 min but if your giving it shit having the revs up at 4000-5000 or doing around 160kph it wont do it at all I don’t want to be doing that all the time but. Because it’s a new motor

My fuel pumps and by proxy engine died whilst the car was running in my garage one day. First be aware, there are TWO pumps. The low pressure pump is located inside the tank and can be removed with the sender/pickup. It sits inside a swirl pot so you need to twist it clockwise a bit to lift it out. The second pump is the high pressure pump, strapped to the back of the fuel tank. I'd suggest running both pumps off the car by connecting them to 12V. (make sure they have some liquid to suck) Both should be able to pump 2 litres per minute. In my case, the LP pump had just a limp dribble, and the HP pump was totally seized.

To answer your question tho, yes - VN and VL use a common fuel tank and pump layout. I used a LP pump from a VN on my car, and a HP pump from a Camira, which uses the same HP pump again. I would have used the VN's one if it had not already been taken. Car runs sweet again now.

If your pumps are fine, try checking your fuel pump fuse and relay.

My car did the same thing but is was the CAS (crank angle sensor) still doing it now when ever it gets to operating temp its fine while I’m moving but when I stop and there is no cool air going over the Dizzy it dies it also dies when driving in slow traffic but once I get speed up it comes right. When it does die I have to wait half an hour or so for it to cool down then its away again I can’t be bothered fixing it cause the engine is getting tossed for a V6 in weeks so I’ve just parked it up.

So there will be a perfectly good RB30 for sale soon if you live in Auckland, New Zealand area. Runs real well apart from the CAS sensor hydraulic lifter are even quiet

Sounds like a problem i once had.
possibly a rag or such from a time gone by when fuel cap was lost.
Evey time the tank got low or was driven over a bumpy road. the rag was sucked onto the fuel pickup and starved the engine.
When rested the rag fell off and it then started.
If you hane to take your tank out, check inside for surprises.

another possibility is that a section of the rubber fuel hose is kinking shut when it gets warm enough and straightening out again when it cooled

Mate Im having a problem also with my VL, I put a new exterenal pump on and you can now hear it priming where you couldnt before, but its still not getting fuel, I took the hose of that runs from the internal to the external pump and kicked it over, and still no fuel, so does that mean Im up for the internal pump aswell ?
Cars been sitting for around 12 mths on empty so would that be the reason its stuffed both pumps do you think?
Aslo what the best way to get the LP pump out of the tank ?

Nice Thread dig, probably should have started your own thread.
anyway, from your description of your problem it does sound like the internal pump is not working, if you have checked your pump plug for good clean contact and you have fuel and the external is priming, then I would say the internal is stuffed.
to remove it you need to jack the rear of the car up , do it on both sides of the body and use stands, do not jack it up under the diff, you want to jack it up so the diff hangs down as the body goes up this will allow enough room to pull the pump out without getting stuck on the diff.
make sure you have battery disconnected, and very little fuel in the tank. disconnect the hose and plug on the round plate on the fuel tank.
undo all the bolts on the round plate and gently pull it towards you as you tilt it down to clear the swirl pot pull it further out and as it is almost all the way out you will need to turn it and tilt it to get it out.
    hope that helps.

Mate done what you said an all good getting it out, but now I put the new one in and its still not pumping fuel, I pulled it back out and put it in a bucket of fuel and its working but no fuel is being pumped through, so I ask is the pump faulty or am I doing something wrong ?
