could be the flange gasket. you won't see anything suss but you'll hear it. same as manifold gasket. it might have come loose a little cos of snapped studs.

the noise it's making when i heard it the first thing i said to him was flange gasket but he reckons he's checked it and it's not that.... he also mentioned something about it sounding like it's backfiring when he backs off the accelerator???

It has to be either the manifold gasket or flange gasket leaking to make it backfire when you back off the throttle. Take the heat shield off the manifold, start her up and give it a few quick revs on and off the throttle while someone listens with one ear close to the manifold. It should tick evertime you hit the throttle if it is leaking

backfiring can be from an intake manifold leak allowing air to be sucked in under vacuum
a length of garden hose with one end held to the ear can help isolate where the noise is coming from

    G'day Bangers, Ppl,

How long to change the Exhaust Gasket.
The one between the head and Ehxaust Manifold.
    Any 'special' tools?
What else to do while I'm at it?

Would it be a "Flange Gasket"?
    Um
    What is a flange gasket?

It's sounding like a 'leak' only on one cylinder. It's on the Daughters RB30.

ivaninoz try pm ing bangers or post on his thread, but for wot its worth a couple of hours to change manifold gasket cos you'll probably break (if not already broken) at least two studs.remove the heat shield and check the rear manifold studs they're the ones that usually break. you'll need new studs!(12)stud extractor tool. flange gasket is where your cast iron manifold meets the twin engine pipe. use the garden hose in the ear technique as previously mentioned on this thread to locate the leak. recommend extractors! no more broken studs engine runs cooler, eliminates flange and gasket
