hi all.
just wondering if anyone could shed some light on my problem..
my rear wheel bearing is in a really bad way so i got a complete axle and wheel bearing from the wreckers.. my problem is that when i tiik it out i had to give it an almighty wack to dislodge it but i cant get it back in there.. it sits in there but wont seem to clip in... i have tried tightening up the bolts on the plate but they just do up and dont seem to make a difference.... could it be the diff that is actually buggerd causing the axle to move in and out or could i just need to replace the bearing cone as the old worn and noisy one might have worn it beyond repair... also could it just need more force to pop it into place...
thanks heaps
dave
oops sorry posted wrong... mods delete pls......sorry dave
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
You should always replace the cone when you replace a bearing because the cone can destroy the new bearing in no time if it is worn. The axel probably isnt going in far enough because the splines arent going into the diff centre. You might have to turn the axel as you wriggle it up down back and forward until you feel it fall into place.
wiggle it a bit while tapping it with a piece of wood. and you should definately change the cone, its the outer race for the bearing and are matched.
could it be different no spline ??
checked the splines and they are the same count... also it goes in a little but just doesnt seem to lodge into place.... i will replace the race tomorrow after i get the matching one from the wreckers........ hopefully that fixes it...
if not if anyone in adelaide has a complete diff i will be looking to buy...![]()
do not use s/h bearings if thats what your doing...?? why not just get new ones... only about 20bux if that or a set of bearings and seal. use your original axle and replace em. and while ya at it replace the other side......... using s/h bearings will be wasting your time.......
If it only moves in and out about half a mm dontworry about it , if it has more you might have to put shims behind the cone to space it out to get rid of the movement.
The cone is the bit of the bearing that is in the diff housing, you would need to put the shim behind it and then tap it back into the diff housing. If you put new bearings in there shouldnt be much movement so you wont have to worry about shims.
Are you using the right axle? Left and right axles are different in size, but not by alot. Left are shorter, and usually the most prone to snapping (and garunteed if you have a weldy)

dave
hey again.
another question.. haventr been able to take it to the mechs yet.. but i bought a wheel bearing kit and the new one has the bearing race joined to the actual bearing....the guy said the disk brake rear ebds take a different bearing... could this be why mine has been loose as i has the bearing from the drum rear end????
thanks
dave
Hrrm not sure about that one. I didnt know that disc and drum rear ends used different bearings and cant find anything mentioned in my Gregorys or Ellerys manuals. The Ellerys manual does mention that the axle seal acts as a spacer to get the correct bearing clearance so it must be the correct seal.
ahh ok.
when i try and wobble the new bearing it doesnt move but it feels like it is moving from the diff end not the bearings.. is it possible that the diff is broken and not the bearings?.
You probably have some wear in the axle splines and the side gears in the diff. It shouldn't make any noises but could be a weak spot, as in the splines will eventually strip if you give it too much of a flogging. I would just drive it and see how it goes, it could last for years.
