    Default G'day

Hi fella's, just wanna say how you going, im new here and I just picked up my VL 5.0l today, everything was sweet but it seems as though the starter motor decided to go! Not happy JAN, anywho, should be fixed tomorrow, but what I would like to know is, what simple things can I do to achieve more grunt out of the car. I am pretty sure its stock, it has an exhaust and extractors, but thats about it, im not a mechanically minded person, my mates are but getting answers from them is like getting blood out of a stone.

So just wanted to know, what things can I add on, what sort of carby would be good for a 308? What other mods can i add on that wont cost thousands but will give it some extra grunt?

All your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

The stock Rochester quadrajet is a great carby
Think about a cam and inlet manifold, and some head work, have the spark remapped, then take it to the dyno tuner and have the carby tuned a bit.
Talk to an engine builder for some more specific advice, but that should give you something to think about

Cool thanks mate, not sure what you mean when you say the spark needs to be remapped? What does that involve and what benefits come out from doing this???

    Cheers

Once you have decided on a cam, take your cam specs and dizzy to performance ignition in nunawading and they'll remap the dizzy curve to suit.

the car already has all the power you need, get some premium quality tyres and special attention to the brakes, shockers and springs
also if a young driver, do an advanced driving course and hopefully stay alive longer

VL 304 isn't turbo pattern. Even with an adapter how would it work? dont know mu8ch about them but arent they electronically controlled? whereas the trimatic (if thats what you have) is controlled by vacuum.
Supra 5 speeds go in nicely.

a cam is gonna cost you alot, and think about the price for someone to put it in for you, inlet manifold would probably be easier, not sure of gains involved.

them get your carby re tuned
    Like CraigL304 said

i wouldn't bother changing it, just a retune of it.

not too sure on the dizzy side of things but i'm sure if you go to that place in nunawading that someone mentioned they will have a chat with you about it

Its an early t700 from a vn v8 with cable kick down. The electronic boxes were introduced in the vr.

A cam kit will cost $200 at most, and you could install it yourself. Its not that hard to do as long as you make sure everything lines up and goes in the same as it came out. And trust me, it'll be worth it where as an inlet manifold wont give any real power increase on it's own, its definatly worth doing for better airflow. Talk to an engine builder if you can, they'll give you an idea of what to expect from each upgrade. It's way to complex to explain in writing

Thanks for all the info guys and GALS, you seem a good bunch, it is currently in the shop now. Noisy lifter is being replaced, getting all the safety issues sorted out also.

I will probably get the carb retuned and look into a procomp dizzy, other then that, I will tidy the paint work up and leave it as is, it's a nice clean car and that's how I would like for it to stay.

By the way, im in Sydney, where is nundadundawingydingy???

So that means 308 bits aren't compatible are they?

They're all interchangeable, parts for a 304 are the same as 308, but efi motors run a different valve sequence.
