this was happening on my VL 6cyl auto, there was a small hole in the diafram of a vacuum modulator, so the fluid was slowly being sucked up into the intake manifold and burned in the engine, causing occasional exhaust smoke

therefore there was no sign of any fluid leakage around the trans

A local auto trans bloke who is supposed to be good, had never heard of this

luckily some here had.....
