i want to know of any reasons people have heard not to go a twincam conversion. at the moment i am at a crossroads. i like the idea and extra performance of twincam but it seems to be more expensive. i know all forms of increasing power cost money but do people think this is a worthwhile way or cost effective?
the argument my friend has is that the most powerful vl in australia has a single cam and that there must be a reason for it.
i have a rb25det engine there for the conversion but have a buyer for it so i'm debating which way to go.
so you have got a rb25det? why not chuck that in instead of just the head! The head is a hard conversion and to find info on it go to here http://wiki.r31skylineclub.com/index...Cam_conversion
i have always heard GOOD things about a twin cam head conv... unless its from rb20... then its just a restriction...
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
RB25 or 26 heads from what I've heard, fit best on the RB30 bottom end...
yeah i've got the rb25det with vvt to go on but wondering if its worth it as so many people don't bother. is it cos it is dearer or cos its not worth the money and hassle?
But still, getting the vvt, with twin cams and 4 valve per cylinder allows for much better breating, that along with the extra 500cc capacity of the RB30 bottom end. Also, if you wanted to go crazy, stroke and bore the RB30 out even more, so much better breathing with a larger capacity. This opens up vast possibilities for the future upgrade path of the engine... Or you'd imagine so anyway...
i'm looking to bore it out about 20thou. i have 3 options of compression depending on piston choice, 7:1,8:1, or 9:1. i've been advised to go the 8:1 by using NA pistons. but someone else also told me to go 9:1 with the rb25 pistons.
By boring it out 20 thou for each cylinder? What capacity increase does that give ya?
no idea. i'm only boring them out to account for wear. that way my clearances will be perfect. i'm going to use standard cams as well to save money and put an adjustable cam gear on the exhaust cam as the inlet has the vvt. i have an aftermarket high mount exhaust manifold and i'm getting aftermarket plenum plus splitfire ignition.
Darn, if you had the dosh, an aftermarket cam would be sweet tho man, like lumpy, crow or craine or something...
i wouldn't touch crow if you paid me. crower are very good. hks would be my pick. unfortunately the cams cost $1000+ a pair. the standard cams are good for about 500hp. if i came upon some quality ones under $1000 i'd seriously consider getting them. if i wanted to go all out i could pull 900hp easy but i want something more streetable. 500-600hp is heaps. i'd be happy with 450rwhp.
Lots of my mates have gone Lumpy cams, but I've got my eye on Craine, you should have a look at them Bangers... I agree tho, keeping your power 'streetable' is a wise idea, but having your engine breathe better might even help with economy a bit (or am I dreaming here?)![]()
