    Exclamation Major Ticking

Hey, got yet another problem with my VL. Recently after a good burnout competition. The motor has developed a rather loud ticking sound at light to half throttle. When I take off normally, if I dont shift then it sounds like a very fast tick. This is not the problem but this is what it sounds like. You know the way the injectores tick at idle??? Its about 3 times as loud and heaps faster. The ticking speed matches the engine revs. I think I got a loose valve. I can't notice a power loss or anything. The oil was changed 2 months ago. Along with the oil filter... WHAT IS MY PROBLEM??? I don't have an oil pressure gauge, I know I need one and I have the dual pillar pod setup, I just dont have any gauges to put in it... HELP

Maybe you blew out your exhaust mainfold gasket. That will tick with the engine revs. Get a piece of garden hose and hold one end to your ear and with the other end follow around the manifold where it meets the head, most likely it will be the back that has blown out if indeed this is the problem.

if it follows the rev range its highly likly to be a sticky lifter or two,
try new oil with the lifter free adative stuff from nulan
if that does not work after the desinated time it states on the bottle then there is either a problem getting oil up to the lifter or they are well and truly stuffed, just replace them.

Yep ok, there are lifters in there, most OHC engines run straight off the cam lobes. Inefficient design of the RB30 if you ask me...

Yeah its only 2 valves per cyl as well, but it still gets along quite well and was space age in its day and has even more technology than an ecotec. Things like self diagnosis and the ecu's ability to tune the fuel/spark up to 100 times a second so the mixture is always perfect or adapted to your driving style are good things.

The rb's have hydrolic lifters that run from the camshaft and these get gunked up from years of abuse etc.
