lifter noise is common for the rb30 is it due to worn/old lifters and/or failing oil pump (low oil pressure).

Every so often when u start your car cold, or idleing you will hear a tapping sound briefly until the oil lubes them. Not really a mega problem unless they r doing it all the time or u got **** oil. Mine does it briefly when i start it from sitting overnight. Im not worried.
Hope they dont do it all the time for ya:P

There is a thread here somewhere that details how to clean them. Big job time wise but worth a shot first.

    Default noisy lifters

This topic has been covered in a lot of earlier posts. Also see the articles section on the site www.calaisturbo.com.au on "Changing lifters" and "Cleaning lifters". You can try engine flush (Wynns etc) to clean out the oil galleries, and subsequently, lifter quietener (Nulon etc). But usually if the lifters rattle on cold starts, and also tick when the engine is hot, then they are worn out.

You can also hunt around VL and Skyline wreckers for second hand lifters - but they have to be properly cleaned and checked for bleed pressure. After they are primed with oil, if they press down just a fraction of a millimetre it usually means they will be noisy.

Avoid aftermarket lifters - I tried 2 sets, both of which rattled at cold start and ticked loudly!! A GMH engineer told me aftermarket lifters are no good in VLs, now I believe him.

I recently negotiated the price on a set of genuine Nissan lifters from a Nissan dealer for just under $800. The fitting job is easy, about one and a half hours work. Do it yourself or pay under $200 to have it done.
