handbrake stuck

my car is stuck at the shops with the handbrake stuck on. you can release the lever but the brakes have binded to the drums. has anyone else had this problem? how do i release them? my mate said to hit the backing plate with a hammer and at worst take the wheels off and hit the drums. i've tried going off and on the throttle in reverse rocking the car but nothing. its happened before but then they clunked off. i've been meaning to replace the shoes but haven't had the time. please help!!!!!!!!!!

Grab the handbrake lever, and while pulling it up, push the button to release it. Do this while going backwards slowly, it should release. If it doesn't release, push the brake pedal a couple of times, still while going backwards.

well i got the car home. turned out to be a stuffed wheel cylinder. now i have to replace both cylinders and both sets of shoes.
