since I have an identical parts car in the back yard, I removed both tanks and put the parts one on my wagon, a heck of a job but fairly straightforward
I finally got to see the swirl pot for the internal fuel pump ( 6 cyl) which can just be seen thru the hole for the internal pump holder, at the right angle
its brown plastic, oval shape sitting in the bottom and attacked by a rubber hose to inside the return pipe, must have been put there before the 2 hAlves of the tank were joined, gawd only knows what can be done if this pipe eventually rots, the swirl pot is abou1 and a half inches high but there must be some holes in it to allow the last of the fuel in into flow into it
the idea I suspect is to have plenty of fuel available for the pump when the tank is low
I swapped the internal pump over, but I couldnt see how or where the pump was sitting down in the fuel bowl
I had earlier problems due to my new internal pump having a long filter bag all off to one side, this wasnt allowing the pump to sit down low enough in the pot, I turned this 180 degrees and as luck would have it it sits down well, so no more loud fuel gurgling noises or running out of fuel too soon, a short filter bag with half on each side of the bottom of thepump would be better
no more leaks for now and heres hoping, are VL fuel tank leaks common?
lessons learned, due to the high pressure, all fuel hose clamps with new hose must be done up very tignt, untill it seems the clamp will break, then tightened again later
when under the car watch for drops of petrol from hoses that can get into your eyes, ouch!
the parts car tank had a coating of mud and sand on the bottom, dont know how it got there, I decided to leave it alone, the other tank was surprisingly clean, couldnt see any rust inside either
both pumps now make different noises, maybe there is still some air in the system
the grommet around the filler neck isnt yet in properly, but its near enough
as mentioned, some of the vapor hoses can be inspected by removing the inner back mudguard on the filler side, but if perished, I guess the only problems would be fumes escaping into the air
