    Default Walsh (?) Plugs

Anyone know what a walsh plug is?

I dont know if they are actually called walsh plugs but my mechanic reckons I need 4 new walsh plugs.

If anyone can direct me to some info I may be able to replace them myself.

Apparently they are located on the side of the engine and may need the manifold removed in order to replace them.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks guys,

welsh plugs! circular indents under inlet and exhaust manifolds about 1 inch in diameter look for the corrosion deposits building up around them!

just some metal plugs in the side of the motor to fill the holes up where the machines moulds needed gaps.

about 50cent peice in size and as said along the block.
exhaust manifold might have to come off to make it easyer to access.
and i believe there is also one on the inside of the thermostat housing too.

why did he say you need them? are they leaking?

    Thanks for the tips guys.

Ok well they have rusted right through the centre of them Ive been told.

Yesterday I was driving and the temp guage shot up and coolant was pissing out from what I thought was near the block.

Ive just had the radiator serviced and the block flushed and a brand new pump, so I didnt know what was up so I took it the mechanic and he says the welsh plugs are rusted through and wants to charge me $300 to change them all.

i would recomend driving aroudn with it like that, as it will cause head problems and if it cracks or gasket gets blown your looking at over $1300 for a mecahnic to get it all done.

i dont think there is much involved in it, just pop out and hit in your new ones with a socket or a end of a hammers handle, but i beleive the cooling system needs draining again and then the cost of the plugs there self and possible exhaust manifold coming. so $300 seems like a alright price

Yeah I havent been driving it I towed it.

So are they easy to get to? Because if I can get to them to remove them Id have no problem picking up a set from Repco and replacing them myself.

Thanks for your effort man, Im appreciating your help.

the welsh plugs themselves cost almost nothing, lucky you dont have a 3.8, the engine has to be taken out to access all the welsh plugs in a 3.8.

I would get a mechanic to do it as sometimes plugs of different sizes need to be tried to get the correct fit
you need to pay more attention to the chemicals in the cooling system water, also use only well known brands, some are just coloured water

in about 50 years of driving Ive never had any welsh plug problems simply thru flushing the cooling system and adding chemicals when needed

leaking or blown welsh plugs are a common cause of severe engine damage from overheating as often the water loss isnt noticed before its too late
I heard of a blown plug on a falcon with the engine coming out to repalce it

Man welsh plugs are easy to do make sure you get the right size and that you hit them in straight and even also not to far. They're pretty easy to get out with a screwdriver. $300 for a job that requires no skill at all almost sounds like a rip-off. Also there are welsh plugs in the cylinder head aswell.
