when direct fuel injection was becoming popular, there was a worry that the inbjector for a cylinder could become partly blocked, causing that cylinder to run lean, and burning out the exhaust valve
the temperature gauge probably wouldnt show anything wrong

doews this ever actually happen with the VL c cyl engine??

I guess it would depend on the condition of the entire fuel system, from tank to injectors.
