G'day, I just picked up my first commodore, an '87 VL with an n/a rb30, and got a nice welcome to the club with a cracked head while i was driving it home from the purchase. I understand this is a common problem with vls, and i've got info on how to bleed the sucker, once i get it running again. What's an easier fix here, doing the work myself: a new engine, or just the head? as they're both gonna cost me about the same. And if I'm gonna do the head, does anyone know of a good source of info, other than the greg's service manual?
mate if you need a head i have a couple. one s/h one in good nick. also i have one that has only done under 10,000km. it was put onto my bros car before i wrecked it. its obviously stil in good condition. its not a recond head either is a brand new one. if interested drop me a line =)
If your not gonna do it urself then shop round and see which will be cheaper.
I cracked my head gaskets and it cost me $1600 with everything at cost price to the shop and 30hours labour.
My mate cracked his and got a friend to do it for him cheap and his cost him $1700.
The cars were off the road for over a month.
maybe suss out a second hand engine for a couple of hundred or if u want to spend and be happy do a turbo conversion.
30 hours labour for a head gasket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
