Hi all...
I wonder if any can give me some advice on the following..
A mate of mine owns a pretty tired 6 cyclinder VL commodore.
He has a mate who just smashed his VN 5 litre at 160km and walked away.
VN front damage.. i.e. Radiator fan and water pump..
Otherwise mechanics seem fine.
Q: Is dropping the VN 8 and Auto a major job.. i.e. Exhaust of course to be upgraded.
What about wiring etc.
He thinks the VN diff may fit the VL, not so sure my self.
Anyhow I want to give him some advice, on the upgrade.
To sum up.. VN 5 Litre and Auto and Diff/Shaft into VL 6 sedan Auto
I have managed to do a few upgrades in the past and realised things like mounts and crossmembers etc can be tricky to match up.
Did a Datsun 200B Engine and Auto replacement into a Rover 2000.
Wsnt that hard, some minor heater/Firewall mods and Tailshft and of course cross memeber.
Big block chev into a cortina, drag car.... FUN FUN FUN.
350 Chev into a sunbirde coupe, some miner chassis and engine bay mods.
I think the VL may be a little tougher,![]()
I may be wrong..
Oh please prove me wrong.. Ha Ha.
Cheers:
nah its pretty easy just buy a vl v8 k frame put that in then just drop the engine in.... but with the diff its wider then the vl so id track down a vl turbo diff .....then u have to get a custom speedo cable to work with the vl dash but yea its not to much trouble if uve done a few engine swaps
wrecking VL COMMODORE 5 speed
FOR SALE : supra 5 speed box suite holden v8 $800
Thanks for the advice, I will pass it onto my mate..
Did you have any wiring problems ?
Oh yeah did the tail shaft need any mods. VN to VL..
Besides maybe the front yoke. Shortened etc ?
i was gonan do this conversion a few months back. to use the T700 gearbox, u have to modify the trans tunnel abit by. the diff is wider in the VN but it will still fit. he just wont be able to have big or wide rims on it. as said, u could hunt down a VLT diff but apparently theres no difference between a VLT diff and a VL N/A diff excpet the VLT is 28spline axels and 3.45:1 ratio. although i would use a VLT diff for the ratio lol.
i went to a few places to get prices on doin the conversion and they were all basically the same price. around $2000 - 2200 price range. but that was to take motor, gearbox, brakes (VT brakes), diff centre (3.9:1), make up an exhaust, and do all the wiring. prety much a drive in drive out situation.
Cheers - guys... Well I think this project is a go ahead.
So Hopefully all is well when completed.
Thanks again
oh just buy my vl v8 and slip the newer engine in there.
