    Question VL auto tranamission mystery

Hi I am just new to forum and hope someone can enlighten me. Had transmission of my 86 VL Berlina rebuilt 12 months ago. no problems. Two days ago cruising in overdrive at 110klm/hr, suddenly car in neutral. Plenty of clean tranny fluid - checked that. As usual VL got me home, left it out of overdrive and no problems. Now continually slips into neutral when speed reaches 75-80klm especially if throttle back slightly. Warranty people feel it is electrical, but want to look at it. Trouble is their workshop is 80klm away and if it is not a warranty prob will cost me $132 to have it towed there. If it is electrical or other mechanical, I can get it done locally. Wondering if anyone had any thoughts. Much appreciated. This may not be related but have had intermittent trouble with overdrive for last 7 years. Would engage in overdrive at 80klm/hr whether overdrive selected or not. Would not drop out of overdrive by deselecting switch or by throttle. Had leaking fuel injector and tappet gasket replaced late last year and overdrive worked perfectly. Not sure if this is connected to current problem.

Its funny that you had it rebuilt and it worked fine but had problem for 7 years now they are back...I suggest you drive it there beacuse if you can get it under warranty you should have no problems and being specialists they should be able to find it simple...id be checking codes...after a year things shouldnt be slipping so i cant see it being the gearbox itself...

Other people have had probs with overdrive an it was the speed sensor in the instrument panel (bad solder joints)..
I was confused now I'm just not so sure!!

yeh sensors over tym a) wear and b) come loose in their fittings...output and input sensors help in telling the computer and valves when to change up or down...bit funny that it clicks to neutral though but when you say could be a solder it might have come loose and there for either shorts out or being no connection might just stop all together as in no gear even neutral

And if I'm correct here I think it's a neutral like feeling and it's not really selecting neutral...

A over full trans can do this too!!

    Default Thanks for the info

Thanks for the feedback. The overdrive problem remained, even when I had transmission rebuilt. It only went away when I had tappet gasket and leaking fuel injector replaced. Interesting when you say "neutral like feel" rather than actually going into neutral. When I have problem solved will post it,

Will check tomorrow morning. Is this the electronic control unit? Forgive me for the dumb questions. Girls have to work harder to understand mechanics
