this applies to both when hot and cold
keep foot away from accelerator pedal
turn on ign and listen for fuel pump whine, this can usually be heard easily.wait until it stops
then give a short run of starter motor and it should start first time every time, only use accelerator when engine is running
the pump noise and other fuel system noises change as the tank empties
holden must have known the main pumps would be noisy as its mounted on a separate subframe, isolated by thick soft rubbers
Step 1: Reach into pocket for keys
Step 2:Select the appropriate key
Step 3: Insert key into ignition barrel
Step 4: turn key in a clockwise direction.
Step 5: Vrooooooooooooom burble burble burble.
Sorry LOL I really am but i couldn't help myself.
The external is a noisey bugger no doubts there. (especially if the rubber boot has been removed at some stage.)
You forgot 'Step 6: knock on the fuel gauge' lol.

turn igniton on
pump pedal down and release back up slowly
and turn over the motor

automatic choke on a VLwhere ???
Back on topic
Step 1: Check if anybody is watching
Step 2: Reach into pocket for screwdriver
Step 3: Bust door lock, get inside
Step 4: Insert screwdriver into ignition barrel
Step 5: turn screwdriver in a clockwise direction.
Step 6: Vrooooooooooooom burble burble burble squeeeelllll smoke
yer i was a bit confussed when i saw it in the manual (the orignal owners manual from factory) and had to read it twice.
but for a wild guess at how it works i say it would activate the computer onto a alternitive run and posibly run at a richer tune to help idle while on very cold mornings
just a guess at how it works though

I havn't heard of it happening on petrol, but years ago when I was doing gas conversions we had plenty of fuel injected cars on gas that would backfire when using the throttle on start-up. It would blow the air box to bits or split the intake plastic tubes.
gas always back fires, thus newer factory fitted gas cars have springs on the air boxes to allow the presure to excape without blowing a huge hole in the airbox
BLOWING UP AIR BOXEShaha thats funny everytime I see it. does any body know if this happens to the new injected gas systems?
I can't belive I posted in this thread
