fork under the needle and pull it up straight, takes a bit of force.

as for getting it to zero, the rod that holds the needle will only spring back around to zero and hit a stopper when its at zero, so simply just alight the needle to zero and push back on

ive taken my cluster appart many times to fix the odo/trip and fuel gauge many times

Make sure (if the VL clusters came out with the needle fuel gauge) that you note the position of the needle before you remove it, I didn't now my needle moves way over to the right.

at least you have a full tank always
yer good point, but with the vl cluster you will be ok. only the two needles can be removed before the face comes off.
but with the design only the speedo will need to be removed to gain the access need for the odo/trip

cheers mate thanks 4 that. i was just wondering bout it coz wen i pulled the speedo out of the calais dash, the needle didnt stop at the stop, once i pulled it up enuff to clear the stop it went down past zero. if that makes sense. allso do you just leave the little black center cap on the needle?

yes the needle and the black cap on it are one piece, they come off together.

as for the calais speedo turning down maybe the needle was off at some stage and placed back on past the zero so the speedo would read slower.
as it shouldnt turn down much further unlease its been tampered with

i know this is a really old thread but posting here is better than starting a new thread with the same problem...

I stripped all the dash out of my '98 VT S commodore today, got the cluster out completely and set it down on a table. i took the 6 screws found on the face of the cluster and got the back off. i have several questions to ask, is anyone 100 % sure that i can pry off each of the needles with a fork with no consequences (On a "VT" commodore)? i already tried it with a fork and i was putting some serious pressure on the fork and no prying was happening. Can anything bad happen from lifting the circuit board off the back of the cluster and accessing the inside this way? the circuit board doesnt seem to be held in with screws but i think the pins holding the needles extend to the circuit board.
ive also heard that VT's arent as expensive to repair as individual gauges are replaceable unlike older commodores.
i did all this in maybe 3 hours including putting it back in and i got several "your going to break it" and "your paying for damages" from dad. the only thing that broke was that the ring of light around the key hole doesnt light up anymore which is strange cause i didnt touch the steering column. can this light be changed also? it already looks wierd cause half the ring is (was) green and the other half is clear.

i tried fingers again today, still didnt work. are they particularly delicate things the mechanism behind the needles? BTW the ring of light fixed itself, the little digital display however didnt make it through the operation i dont see why though, i was gentle with everything but it flickers on and off now and all the numbers are displayed but they are only half there. i took it out 4 separate times today just forgetting to put things back. everything is secure now but i still have 4 screws that i couldnt find a place for. i love holdens for the "use the same screw for everything in the interior" so aussie and lazy. stupid volkswagons. using a different screw for every whole.
