Default Problem Related to Oil Pressure

After running low on oil a few weeks ago ( it now has new oil and filter) it has started making a whiring sound straight after starting the car, only for about 5 seconds, then the oil pressure gauge flicks up to normal position, guage does not move imediately on start up as before.Any ideas on fixing would be much appreciated, thanks guys. Martin

You say low! How low ???

Maybe some damage or now because the oil is new it's just a bit thicker to pump at start up..

depends on if you had oil pressure when it was low...or do you mean just low on the dip stick?
I was confused now I'm just not so sure!!

find out if the VL oil filter has a non return valve, if it does, these can occasionally fail and allow the oil to all leak from the filter to the sump, causing a dry start
also giving a false reading on the dipstick although the VL filter wouldnt contain much oil being small

Maybe the oil filter is faulty like Harry said and is the filter the same brand as before??

is there a change in engine noise to correspond with the gauge pressure coming up? if yes then, the anti drainback valve is probably shagged.

if no, ie engine sounds smooth straight away, then there might be an air pocket just prior to the gauge which will have to compress to a point before you get a hydraulic response from the gauge... hence the delay in gauge reading on start up. I have a mechanical gauge ie an oil line straight into the back of the gauge and had to ensure it was bled free of air before connecting up to the back of the gauge.

    good luck.

Actually, there is an engine noise corresponding to gauge pressure. So where is the anti drain back valve to be found, and how can I check to see if operative.Cheers Martin

thy're normaly built into the oil filter, most of the Ryco ones have antidrainback valves, having said that i know nothing about Nissan 6s, I'm guessing yours is a 6? but what Ive suggested would apply to all engines anyway. the other thing is correct viscosity oil, ie the oil is thicker when cold and therefore isnt sucked up through the oil pick-up as quickly by the pump.

My last filter was a Ryco and had no problems, so I better go back to Ryco, had no idea valve is built into canister until mentioned on this thread. Now can I replace oil filter again just by leaving engine till cold, like in the morning and unscrewing,or do I have to drain oil once more. Thanks guys for all your input. Cheers Martin.

Dude thats why I asked if it was a different brand, so put a Ryco 1 on and try it...

Also the filter you said you've got on at present does NOT have an anti drain back valve, so I'd say that's you're problem..

When the engine is cool/cold just change the filter and put some oil in the filter first..

So the puralator filter doesnt have the drainback valve? Thought that was something that was standard in all filters thesedays, did you "talk"/strangle to the person that sold you this brand?

Yip, and he wasnt aware that it didnt havea drain back valve and there was no writing on the box either, where as the Ryco box did.He certainly is aware now.Martin
