Does anyone know if you can use a front VK window screen rubber on a VL as the VL has a plastic cover and it looks shocking. Having it look like the VN would be a better option.
It may not be a VK rubber but I bet someone out there knows what I am talking about.
Any information about this would be appreciated.
Aren't the VK and VL bodies basically the same? The trim around the windscreen should fit.
If memory serves the VL was the first Commodore to get it's screen glued in compared to the old "H" rubbers that were used earlier. You would need to kick a screen out of both and measure the flange in the cavity where the screen sits to know if they changed. If the hole was the same size then I guess it could be done but you would also need a VK screen too.
Be aware that glued in screens provide a lot of rigidity to the upper area of the shell and you will loose this with the other method.

Anyone out there that has seen this done or knows about what I want.
I know it can be done I was told it was a VK rubber or maybe it was a VH, what model I am not sure, I just thought there would have been a few VL owners that have done it to their own car.
May be I should phone around O'Brian's or Nova to find out if they know.
I just don't like the crappy %#$& plastic around the VL screens and it would look so much professional with just the rubber and everyone knows that the VL so called seal leaks.
i was talking to a girl at the perth autosalon, who had put a vk front end on a vl body and it looked farken sweet. the fenders and headlights etc matched up with minimal panel beating, ie, bending and drilling, but the most involved bit was the cowl between the windscreen and the bonnet.
this must surely mean that they arent the same shape in that spot, and if the curve is greater, then the rubber is longer, and vice versa if its straighter, the rubber would b shorter
this means that unless your willing to cut the rubber somewhere on the bottom edge, which is always a risk as far as leaks, your bottom corners would be out of whack.
there has been a few things about this, but getting the right info ,is hard to get , i have seen a few threads about this ,you will have to serch im interrested to the best way to go as well![]()
i saw a vl calais once that had a diffrent front widscreen rubber in it and yea it looked heaps better than the factory item. asked the bloke who owned it and he said he used a vt seal?? i think that any vb vc vh or vk seal should fit as the windscreen shape didnt change thru out the range
the germans designed it, the aussies built it, the japs got it moving and the wogs got it dosing...
ok I found the info I was looking for....
Useing the VN rubber strip will fix the problem but where you have the vertical side strips from the VL it will leave 2 small holes around the edge, so this will need to filled with putty.
I could replace the old plastic VL strips for a price of $98
The price for the new rubber will be an extra $35
Quote for the replacement of window screen $250
Total price $285 + putty&paint to fill the holes
You can use a universal mould, but you will have holes where the old plastic moulds were. You will need to fill them.
I went the vs mould method. I'll try and find a picture when I get home if you'd like to see it.
yer c i would like to see it, hows the car going
I just had a look, I don't have any pictures where you can clearly see it, I'll get some more soon.
Hows the car going? If I was slightly unstable I would have gone on a rampage by now, mechanics really are low life scum.
where did your roadwheels come from, a later model commodore?
Ive seen these wheels on other VLs, what size are they? how wide? and I expect they fit OK?

Fronts were from a VT, rears from a VT ute.
Fitted without any trouble.
I used the VT seal on my '86 a couple of years ago (didn't like the plastics either), and have just replaced the seal on my '88. There is now a seal that is about 4mm wider available, and it looks so much better and prevents water entry a hell of a lot better. Any good windscreen fitter should be able to get it.
BAX or rb26dett, would you be able to enlighten me more on the vt rubber seal,
ive herd you have to rounden the corners off in the area the window sits, to fit them, how much did you/s have to rounden them?
rb26dett have you experianced any problems with the set up? rubber lifting?leaking or fitting faults? and how long since you did it?
ive just cut all my rust out along the windows and i dont want to have the seal leaking causing more rust, so just weighing up if i should go this route or standerd
cheers

I had it done about 18 months ago, no leaks.
Mind you don't drive it much, and hardly ever when it is raining.
