There exactly the same the only difference is the Holden/Nissan written on the rocker cover and the VL had the radiator lower then the Skylines

I know the dizzy caps are different and not interchangable
I think the front of the commodore engine was lowered to fit it under the VL bonnet which some say introduced the steam trap head cracking problem which effects the VL but not the skyline

both engines have the same bleeder bolts for the cooling system

the distributor and crank angle sensor are different!
the wiring looms are labeled GM in a vl and so is the ecu how different they are I am not sure although the vl rb30 was made to GM specification hence the nissan rb30 will beat the vl.

VLs have a higher radiator position while the R31 has lower hence VL RBs pop head gaskets, fuel pumps are differant to the nissan 1 aswell

    oh god!~
there are many differences mostly relating to reliability
the dizzy is munted on vl YES MUNTED I SAID! differently nissan stronger the vl is bush mounted and the r31 is bearing for a start also electrics are better qaulity
    cams are different
    tune different
afm reading different (in early year release)
diff ratios are diff by about 20 km's on speedo (fixable to suit vl with a kit from jaycar i think it was?)
the coil packs are different internally but nissan was taken onto holden ones without problems
basically the nissan has better components and the only way to know for sure would be to try~!
would recomend going forthe r31 engine over vl but be aware there are differences with lifespan of cam belt dizzy and most sensors
most of which the r31 is better qaulity
all of these however are fixable to better than r31 on a vl by the use of aftermarket
dizzy coil ecu tune exhaust and new belts

various accessory connectors are different - alternator, AC, etc.

I suspect the power steer pump will be different too.

r31 ECU triggers fuel pump relay differently from memory - hence the wiring will be slightly different.

Connectors that connect the engine harness to the body loom will also be different.
