G'day...I just bought myself a highly modified 1986 VL Turbo. This thing goes like a rocket but there is one problem which i need help with. When sitting at the lights for a while or driving in peek hour traffic it starts running very rich.
Any ideas as to what this problem might be?
Concur with the air temp sensor, had the same thing in the old duck's vl wagon. Driving around in summer time but the sensor was telling the car it was cold, the car injects a little extra fuel and before you knew the engine was flooding itself. Not saying this is a definate solution but I would start there. Cheers, Heefers
Tuned rich at idle? Aftermarket ECU?
a good description of whats been done to the engine wouldnt go a stray might help track down the problem a bit better

If its a turbo, i would check if anyone has done any modifications, as the usual problem on a vl is the air flow sensor causing it to run rich.
If the sensor is placed in the intercooler pipes, the boost can damage them
My guess would be that a highly modified VL turbo isn't tuned to run around in city traffic. Any car that has a high kW engine won't idle too well.
There was a guy down here that ran a VLT with two extra injectors in the intake pipe, it ran fine with them switched off, when he wanted business he flicked the switch to pump more fuel in.
just a question. do all vl's have air temp sensor? if so where is it located?
the germans designed it, the aussies built it, the japs got it moving and the wogs got it dosing...
all vls have a air flow meter located at the air filter box or pod,
air regulator is located just behind the top water hose, it is round with 1 electrical connection and a hose that connects to the plenum chamber just near the top bleeder valve.
