Default Ignition key can be removed whilst driving

Do I need a new Ignition Barrel?

I'm up for registration and they won't pass the car because the ignition key will come out of the ignition barrel when the car is moving.

I tried my spare key (newish / hardly worn) but that too comes out of the ignition barell when I'm driving.

Any ideas how I can fix this problem without great expense?

Mine does that also. And the horn doesn't work, and it has chopped springs. And they still pass it.... Just take it to someone dodgey who will pass it.

Mmm, now who could I find

Ahh, don't think I'd have much luck in Sydney as all the rego inspectors are top blokes Cough

I'm just wondering if ya took the key out whilst driving would the steering lock come on? Don't try it though I think the steering lock only engages when the barrel is in the start position

Saw some new ignition barells & keys for about 40 bucks so I might just buy one as I'd hate something to go wrong.

Its law in all states. A new barrel will fix it. About $25, easy to do yourself, did it in the VK no problems, VL is the same.

    Cheers, that would be great.

Should get the parts from Melb in a few days, err probably next Mundy or Tuesday as the barrels coming by snail mail.

Anyway thanks for the thought, I'll probably need a bit of advice

Or when you lock the house and get in the car, start it up and realize that you left something inside the house... You can take the key out unlock the house get what you forgot all whilst the old VL is warming up

...or you could just simply attach a quick-realease clip to your key-chain and clip your car keys to that, then when you pull up to your drive way simply unclip the key chain from the car keys and unlock your car hole

and save you the trouble of putting back the old busted ignition barrel.

Crikey! Now that's a good idea That will save me heaps of time

Reckon I'll just get the new ignition barrel, look at it for awhile and then toss a coin to see if I'll install it or sell the car

I'm not sure if its worth all the worry

Well, no problems installing the new ignition barrel but when I re-connected the negative earth to the battery the horn just won't stop She just keeps on and on until I dis-connect from the negative battery terminal.

I thought may be I'd buggered up something underneath the pad (the thing ya push that normally does all the tootin; but even with the pad disconnected from the electrical wiring connector the horn still bellows as soon as I reconnect the negative battery lead to the neg terminal.

So now I'm wondering what I've done wrong?

There's power continuously going to the horn.

I'm sure the new ignition barrel was installed ok but I'm F---ed if I know what's gone wrong.

As a temporary measure I got underneath the car and disconnected one of the electrical connectors to make the horn un-operational.

The car starts up no worries, the accessories work ok and the steering lock works ok

Any Ideas from you guys would be great

    Default Warning

Everythings ok now with the ignition etc but a warning to others if you replace the ignition barrel.

This is probably well know by most but the new ignition barrel I installed of course comes with a new key. The old key from the old barrel obviously opens the door locks and boot but guesss what the new key will also open the door lock and boot.

Now I always use my "Aunger" steering lock; I've also got a set of new door locks that I'll be fitting soon.

Hope this info helps from stopping someone stealing your VL. I hate car thieves especially the Pr---- who stole my VN

Ahh yes, the old VL key thing. If there was one feature I wish my VN had, its that one. I used to park the car, leave it running and lock it while I went into the dairy or whatever. Makes people think it's a VLT with a turbo timer

bUST THE gear lock..hotwire the thing and away ya go...or better still bung in some WD40 and work the key in/out for a while and see if the tumblers inside loosen up..worked for a mate in his old veedub. Otherwise get a new barrell... good luck.

Beg to differ... never use oils of any kind on locks. WD40 you might get away with, but for the most part they will gum up the lock after a period of time and you'll be worse than when you started. Keys and barrels should only ever be lubricated with graphite powder.
