Over the past few weeks, my VLs engine has started up a whine. It has slowly become louder.
I have no idea what it could be, all levels have been checked. I don't know much mechanically, but could it be the diff?
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Cheers.
normally a whine would be associated with the diff, is it coming from the rear of the car?
checked the diff for oil?

seems to be coming from the rear of the car. How would I check it?
checking the diff oil level is pritty basic.
on the face of the diff looking from the rear there will be a rubber plug,
pull it off and dip your finger in. the oil should just be at the bottom of the hole

And if I can't feel oil, top it up?
yep, top it up till its even with the bottom of the hole. try that first.
if no luck could be something like a bearing, jack one side up and spin the wheel, see if you can feel or hear anything not normal.
then lower the car back done and try the other side (assuming that its non lsd)

wait a while after driving it before checking to allow air bubbles to leave oil, otherwise it may seem overfull
also check air breather on one side as it can block with mud causing several problems
experiment so you can demonstrate noise to a mechanic when you want to
