there is a module on the back of the alternator that has two screws on it, unscrew it and wriggle it out, if the old bushes are gone then thats your likely cause. if they arent worn ya alternator is finished

you might be better with a reconditioned exchange alternator with a decent guarantee

Change the whole regulator that contains the bushes is the easiest option. Its the matchbox sized black plastic box type thing held on by two screws on the rear of the alternator, undo screws, disconnect the wire, refit the new one & thats it. Fairly easy job to do!! (Easier than soldering in new bushes anyways IMO)

Should be no more than $50 from any spare parts place. (Note there are 2 kinds of alternators fitted to VL's from memory, make sure you know which it is!)

    theres hitashi and bocsh.

ive got mine appart a much i could so i can paint the casing,

i was going to buy a recondition one (hitashi) but they wanted $490 as its apparently not the most easyiest to get and thats swap over
bocsh is cheaper but im not sure by how much
only diffrence is you will have to change your belt as one is 50mm longer

if its a hitachi alt confine it to the deep coz they are just too expensive to repair, also bear in mind there are a lot morer dramas to an alt than brushes,in other words ya might spend ya cash on a reg assy only to find out that aint the prob,in other words take it to an auto elec.

wreckers supply alternaters for $30-$50 second hand I know, but how often do you have to change them and if you don"t like what they are offering go somewhere else, had my vl five years and never done an alternater!
