Angry vl not going into 4th at all....

my vl goes from 1st to 3rd but will no o ino 4th at all. the kickdown seems to only work below 60kms. after 60km when i put the foot down it wont go back to 2nd, it just stays in 3rd. i have drivin the car around for a few hours and it still wont go inte 4th. is it to do with the wiring at the back off the dash? the power button/ which doesnt seem to work, or the throttle sensor? has any one had this problem?

i think your kickdown switch thing might need adjusting (its at the top of the pedal assembly thingy under the carpet) ,or if its already adjusted to the max the oldschool sliding a bit of garden hose over the white stick thingy brings it closer to the pedal and therefore kicks down easier (or so it has been said).

The power button must be in to engage 4th or overdrive (theres not really a 4th by the way)

speedo sender circuit must be connected to make it kick down correctly also. (have you changed dash clusters?)

by dash cluster i mean the instrument cluster, has this been swapped for a tacho dash?. The vl box will take a while to warm up and will not go into 4th til about 5-10 mins after you start driving with the button pushed in. Its not a power button as such but its more the button that activates 4th, with the button pushed IN 4th should engage at around 60-70 km/h. 4th can never engage with the power light on the dash on as this cancels 4th (button out)

so leave the button in and see if it eventually changes to 4th.

I don't think its your dash cluster, this is normal vl behaviour, if 4th never engages the lock up clutch may be faulty

a temperature sensor stops it going into 4th until everything is warmed up, otherwise damage would result

the dash i think is still stock. it has the speedo, time, temp, fuel etc. there is a problem with the wiring. the fuel gauge wasnt working so i rang a auto gearbox mechanic and he said that when the vl's were made, they greased up the wiring at the back of the dash. after a few years he said the grease becomes thick. he said to spray wd 40 all over the wiring. i did that and the fuel gauge is working but not sure if its accuate. the car will not go into 4th at all. i have driven around(for hours) and it still wont go into overdrive even with the power button in. the car will only go to third and that is it. when driving if i push the button so that power is ingaged(button out) the car does nothing. i could be in 1st,2nd or third and push the button and this does nothing. i still wreckon it has to do with the wiring at the back of the dash. where is the gearbox temp sensor located? or cuold it be the throttle sensor or connections?

it would seem to be stuck in "power" mode which is just 3 speeds and not using the lockup clutch. do you know the history of the car at all? the previous owner could have disconnected the lock up clutch because it had failed or was on its way out etc. My advice would be go to a transmission place and get a diagnosis from them.
