. It deppends on how much cash u wanna spend on your car and try not to skimp to much on the quality of parts like oil , filters and stuff like that if u intend on driving it hard .

1. change the fluids , engine oil , diff & gearbox oil,,
radiator coolant , (brake fluid & power stearing fluid if u wanna go to the extreme )
2. Filters , oil filter , fuel & air filter
3. Check hosse's and replace the ones that are cracked & perished
4. replace sparkplugs & spark plug leads
5. Again if u wanna to the extreme then CAS (crank angle sensor) AFM (air flow meter) I'd sudgest
replacing them and if the old ones are still in working order keep'em.

for the tailgate try some crc/wd40/water dispersant or similar in the lock and jiggle the key around also try pushing and pulling on the tailgate as you try the key if this fails you may need to take the interior trim off to activate the lock.

if there's anyone that lives in Canberra could you point me in the right direction for a good Holden wreckers? need a new tail gate (this one is full of rust), also (yes ive got a sh!t load of questions) how much would it cost to get the bumpers sprayed?
