Unhappy vl keeps breaking down please help

I have a 1988 Vl Vacationer that I have had for 8 years with no problems. In the last few weeks it has developed a problem with getting the fuel pump to come on every time it is turned on. Usually starts okay with sound of fuel pump working but now on occasion the pump does no start however if the mechanic bumps/wiggles fuse box distributor plug etc it will start okay again. It has since had pump replaced and also distributor but problem continues and mechanics can not locate the fault. Please can anyone tell me if they have an idea of what has caused this problem otherwise I will resign myself to being an ex holden owner as it is no longer a reliable option.

Thanks to all who may read this and all help is appreciated.

have you checked fuel pump fuse & relay??

bumping the box is prob just prolonging it that bit futher but I would advise against continuing that sort of thing. I have heard of more than one VL's fuse box melting.....

if bumping the fuse box made the pump work, i'm guessing it's not the pump that's to blame! replacing it was therefore unnecessary.

sounds like the relay is gone, replace it they are cheap. check wiring as well.

Relays have been switched with relay for horn? Still continues to do it. To replace it would second hand do or does it need to be new. Local holden service centre are stumped, have been on it over 10 hours. Who you advice on seeking the opinion of an auto electrician?

Thanks for the help so far please keep it coming.

Theres a guy that makes replacement PCB fuse rails for 75 dollars. Come complete with Installtion instructions on cd. And are heaps better then original. I'll find him, but if you search on CT, you'll find for yourself

    Cool 2nd hand...

second hand, from the wreckers etc is fine.....just look around and get the cleanest looking one...... and take as much of it as you can.....(even cut the wires so you have all new (?) plugs etc...).....

bumping the relay box and it starts, hmmm, replaced the fuel pump, hmm, ok let's get bussy with this one as it's a hard one to repair

serioulsy its a buggered relay base, not the relay, not the pump, just the stinkin relay base, i bet ya what's happend is one of the relay's switches have come loose at the bottom of the relay base,

a replace the relay base or even replace the entire rail, i like th eidea of getting a after market one, as it pisses of the issue it has had in the past with the highbeams melting things

but yeah, replace that or fix it asap, you keep bashing it and it falls out, it will melt your entire fuse box and you will have a nice big pile of smoldering plastic
