Default carpet and underlay/sound deadening

Hello again from NZ
i'm planning on pulling out the carpet and underlay/sound deadening whatever its called. cars had a leak in it 4 who knows how long and i got the front windscreen replaced as it had a crack in it, got the rust underneath it taken out as well.

so now im gunna sand off the surface rust on the floorpan, primer it up and give it a lick of paint just to keep it from rusting any further hopefully.gunna use some of that stuff that converts rust into black primer.

anyway for that i gotta pull out the carpet and underlay/sound deadning.but when i was inspecting it the other day...found that the underlay/sound deadening is just gonna crack if i pull it off (thats probly expected given the cars 21 years old.

so does anyone have any idea what i can use for a suitable replacement for the underlay/sound deadening and where i would be likely to find something?

im gonna put new carpet in (and even if i wasnt) i want sumthing underneath it similar to what it has now, not so much for deadening the sound, that i don't mind, but i want to protect the underside of the carpet from whatever can possibly go on underneath there.

any ideas would be great thanks

When I got new carpet for mine I just got some extra thick deadener stuff that they were supplying with the carpet for a little extra cash, I had two choices between light and thick and was basically just a heavily matted fabric about an inch thick. I can't say whether it's worked or not though because I had nothing to compare it to beforehand.

You could always do that and maybe a few coats of deadening spray like a tar compound, but you don't really want to overdo it. Most of your noise comes in through doors anyway, as they don't seal aswell as you'd like.

ok yea a mate told me to try that tar stuff.i mainly want underlay just to keep the carpet from slipping around and wearing out underneath.but yea that tar would be good to put on the floor once i've sanded back the rust and primered it up.

Ah okay, yeah well this underlay would be the go, are you getting new carpet? Especially if its a premoulded two piece job you should be able to get the sound deadening underlay from the same place.

Knox Auto Carpets - sound proofing

Thats what I have, and from the same place, I guess you just have to track something like that in nz

yea im guna get new carpet and i've found a guy who does the two piece ones and he does underlay too. havent' actually seen any of it yet so i'll go have a look at it sometime. i suppose its better if its quite thick coz it'll flatten out a bit anyway. and if you buy thin stuff the it'll be flattened to nothing so your almost back where your started.

yea i had a look at the knox website $140 for front and rear plush pile, $90 for sound insulation front and rear, $85 to ship to NZ.total is AU $315 (NZ $about $370)

the guy i found does the front and rear plush pile for NZ $310 and underlay was NZ $95 i think so NZ $405 all up and i could pick it up coz its close by.

in a way i'd prefer to get it from Knox because i have heard of them and i understand they have a very good reputation over in Australia. But I'm always a bit uneasy about buying stuff from overseas.

what would you reckon, is it worth the hassle to get it from them?

It's up to you really mate, the price difference isn't anything to really come into it.

Knox was good for me, I'm in central qld and they're in... Down south, and they got it shipped up to me pretty quickly and they had some good service. But it may be nice to pay the local guy - he may be able to help you out if you get stuck or need matching carpet later in the run of things.

thats interesting to hear because whatever is under my carpet feels like cardboard with a tad bit of rubber or something in the mix.about 5mm thick (or thin!) and its so brittle it just breaks off when i pull it back.
