I've tested a Stant brand thermostat, a Trident, and a Nissan one (which was in the car when I got it.

the Nissan opened about 11mm at 90 degrees.

the Stant opened about 8mm at 90 degrees.

the Trident opened about 6mm at 90 degrees, and I took it back and got a full refund. haha

I plan on replacing the radiator.

does anyone have any experience with the alloy ebay radiators?

or can someone point me in the general right direction of a decent quality, brand new radiator?

    thanks.

it makes no difference, I'm doing the radiator and seeing what happens.

the photo at the top of the page was towing an empty trailer, up the freeway, at 100km/hr, this was with the Trident thermostat.

I really expected it to just die, but it didn't!

I bought a kit off ebay for about $70, Gates brand, came with the Stant thermostat aswell.

it didn't come with replacements for 3 hoses, and 2 of the hoses in the kit simply DO NOT fit anywhere, so I'm not too happy about that.

Call Tridon, and ask them for the part number for a High Flow thermostat and order it in. Dont run cooler thermos, as they open too early and they dont work in sync with the fans and engine management. I think 180F or 96^c is what it should be. High Flow thermostat gives you the benefit of a cooler thermo while still operating at the correct time and temp, but will run more efficiently......

any home mechanic, or any mechanic for that matter should get themselves an infra red thermometer. ~$40
With just a little bit of logic it allows one to diagnose the problem and avoid randomly replacing everything until the problem is solved.....an okay practice if time and money are no object!

It does sound though as the thermostat is the problem.

its more like 75 degrees C/170 degrees F

why should I have to buy a high flow thermo just so it flows as well as a standard one?

the original thermostat seems to function fine when tested on the stove top.

however, in the car, it still struggled to maintain proper temperature, and still got warmer than I would have expected, and took ages to get upto temp.

so, a new radiator is on the way

yes, if you randomly replace everything you'll eventually found out what was causing the problem(you could get lucky and it will be the first item)......or you could diagnose.

ah, there's not much in the cooling system after this.

I had wanted to do the radiator anyway, and it always seemed to take to long to come upto temp, so I replaced the thermostat.

been working on the car today, while the radiator was out, I decided to do the timing belt as well.

the belt is pretty much out, I'll be fitting the new one tomorrow

no real problems as of yet.

except... how am I going to tighten the crank pulley bolt back up?

leave the radiator out, use a 1/2 inch drive socket or bar braker
same way you got it off really

no, because I got it undone by wedging a breaker bar, and cranking the engine... lol

I could not get the starter motor off.

    radiator and timing belt done.

now heading up the freeway, the temp needle gets upto the 3rd mark (4th if you count the first one)

which is half way, and a lot better than maxed out

as it gets to the 3rd mark, I think the thermostat opens more, and it drops back to 2.5 or so pretty quickly, then creeps back upto the 3rd mark...

city driving, it sits just above the second mark, upto about 2.5

95% sure the car has a blown headgasket, or cracked/warped head....

so, that was all good fun now wasn't it!

no, it has always been bled properly.

the head/gasket damage must have been done when I towed the trailer up the freeway before replacing the radiator (see pic at top of page)

but the problem didn't show itself till I replaced the radiator... and the timing belt

its not lacking power (no more so than it was to begin with) but when you first start it in the morning, it only fires on 5 cylinder for the first 10 seconds or so, and spark plug 6 appears to have gotten wet/steamed, and it slightly corroding/green on the electrodes.

    hmm.
