    Default Fitting new Alternator bearings?

Do you think this is a good idea,on an '86 with 300+km?Just giving my car a spruce up and nothings actually wrong with the electrics.I was thinking they hold everything in alignment and so new one's may put-off problems,at this age!
    Home job?I have a 3 leg puller.
    cheers

why fix what ain't broken? save your money for a new one when it is needed.
the old one may die eventually and won't cause further problems other than requiring replacement.
I have had my vl for 4 years and am yet to replace an alternator or a starter motor.
oh yeah you will need a soldering iron and a press for the recon aternator job also.

Well i thought a set of bearings at what($50) may be cheap insurance considering age.I've had mine since early '90's,heads never been removed, alt the same. And there's no way i'd fork out $500 on a new one.

Thats about what i was quoted for a new one too (i thought f##k that) . So i bought one off a guy from work that came off a 93 model falcon (it was basicly brand new) so i took it home and fitted it .

It took me about 3 hrs to fit it coz the 2 bottom holes needed to be a bit bigger and wire up a new plug for the 2 wires to plug into the back of the Alternator . I think my old Alternator was rated @ 70 or 75 amp and the ford one is a 85 amp and it only cost me $80

I guess i should have asked what bearings suit this alt,but have done a search and it may be a Hitachi or Bosch anyway.Hard to tell.
Obviously no hurry to do the job and as jas makes good sense, why for gods sake?
    cheers

just a word of warning,if its a bosch which i think it is buy yourself a POZIDRIVE #2 screw driver to undo the screws specially the ones that retain the bearing in the front housing,i know they look like PHILLIPS,BUT BELIVE ME THEY AINT

I ended up having to get the garage press off the bearings and reinstall newies.Complications in taking off the end piece, brush holder end forced
me to give it to them .$70 all up.
Old bearings had rust in them, apparantly from my earlier removing the thermo
and letting the water flow over the alternator,a number of times.Duhh!
