My commodore apparently has a Black 5.0 in it. But the castings on the block say 308. But they never made a black 308, only the 304...
Did they ever make black 308 for racing, special edition... well at all? This is making me question my cars motor.
VK's use black 308's hey? And also wat about VL's?
Maybe the motor has just been painted?

I thought all VLs were 304? And for VK, the early V8s were 308 but I dunno if they were black or whatever...
There were black 308s in the VKs before the change to 304, the only race spec 308s were the L34 blocks in the late 70s. The A9L 304s VK-VL? were similar and the VN- onwards are stronger again than the L34/A9L bottom ends
didn't the A9L and L34 both have 4 bolt mains? and doesn't the vn 304 onwards have 2 bolt mains?
Engine number will always be on the block somewhere.

What about when the block is decked? That can wipe the engine number off.

Decking is when they mill the top of the block. For the life of me i cant remember where the numbers are on v8's but that is the easiest way to tell which year it is out of.
You have to consider it may have been painted all early blocks have 308 cast onto them then efi's have 5.0L cast onto them

thtas just from memory its something i havent really taken much notice off but thats where your number should be and if block has been decked itr could very well be gone happened to a guy at my work his engine ended up with it stamped on the wrong side.....
I had a look at one at work today and your right, its on the front right hand side. It would be possible to deck it off but you'd have to be not paying attention or not have the right sized cutter.

My VL also has the 308 ,it was standard alot of people try to argue with me about it being a 304 but its the same as yours a 308, have had it stroked and recommend i to anyone after loads of torque.
Just to update, a friend of mine bought a 308 the other day, it carries the VL engine number but has 308 cast in the block. Obviously it's a 304 on the insides since that's the only crank they made then but it seems they took a while to change the blocks casting to 5L
Holden changed from the blue motor (VC - VH) to the black motor with the introduction of the VK. The VK's were 308's till about half way thru their model run when Holden reduced it's stroke slightly bringing it down to 304 ci (Slightly less than 5.0 litres) because of the new Group A touring car rules being introduced for 1985.
So yes they did make a "Black" 308.
No. The first Holden 5 Litre to get 4 bolt mains (from the factory anyway) was the VN SS Group A. The VP GTS and VP Clubsport 5000i also got 4 bolt mains. These blocks typically have a VK engine number prefix (nothing to do with the VK Commodore though).
Another reason could be if the block has been decked. Engine numbers often need to be re-stamped but aren't after that operation.

i just got a 'black' 308, but sure of what it came out of. Engine number starts with VJ ...... any ideas, and would it be 308 or 304 ?
thats a 304, out of a VL Commodore
