    Default Advice on a Loved 1986 vl sl

    our family has owned this car since 1993. we love it. was getting fantastic km's which was 550 on regular. It has taken a turn for the worst, it now has 350,000 kms on the clock and still has the original motor and transmission and is completly original from factory.

    The turn for the worst is it now only gets 350km's per tank of petrol. which is 200kms less than previous. and especially now that we run it on 98 octane it has made no difference

    I'm asking for any sort of advice to make this engine drive to near new, increase economy and power. One thing i could think of is getting the engine re-bored and have slightly larger pistons inserted as i think it is having trouble with compression. oh well, any advice would be appriceated, but, we still want to keep the car as long as we can without changing the engine [centimental value & keep it original from factory]

    have u had the injectors serviced

    check injectors,
    o2 sensor might be stuffed now
    coolant temp sensor
    afm settings to stock

    this should keep the car running in top order if all maintained

    How i check mine on my 87 vl berlina is by checking the resistance on each injector, then running a diagnostic on the ecu always does the trick.

    I'm pretty sure theres a couple of otherways that im forgetting

    i'd start off with a compression test - will give you a good idea of the condition of the actual motor.

    Does it burn any oil?

    has it been regularly serviced?
