maybe check your evaporative system, these hoses are very cheap and crappy and are probably all broken, they are pretty easy to replace.
take the cover plate off (4 screws) behind right rear wheel. also check the charcoal cannister and the attached hoses.

as jatsvl said - wouldn't be many vls left that haven't had those hoses replaced. worth doing. remember petrol evaporates quite fast so there might not be any obvious signs that those hoses are actually leaking.

you will need to check the entire fuel system, leaks from petrol tanks do happen, look for petrol on ground where car was parked

remember that leaking petrol washes away dirt and mud so look for any clean areas

there are several evaporation hoses from petrol tank that eventually rot, releasing petrol fumes, removal of tank is needed to replace these hoses, if the fault is only from these hoses, the cars seem to run OK in this condition

Yer the car does run fine.. just has a strong smell of petrol in the car. so you think it is the hoses? not a leaking injector? how much is an average price to get it changed? or is it easy enough to do yourself?

you can do the hoses yourself - have a look - if they appear stuff go to supercheap and buy some hose and some new clips/clamps and go for it.

fill the tank with fuel. go for a run around the block and when you stop have a look at the right hand rear mud flat and see if there is any fuel stain on it. if there is you have a leaking pipe.
also do not over fill the tank unless your going to drive over 50 km straight away
    good luck

I would not recommend doing that because if there is a leak you will have to remove 50lts of fuel to fix it.

first you should locate the source of the smell before buying any parts the "evaporative system" was a possible source suggestion, if you are sure it is that, then reach up under the bumper where the filler is and pull a piece of hose off take that and go get some.
other suggestions were the leaking injectors and the fuel lines front to back under the car and in the engine bay right hand side near the plenium chamber.
