I seem to have a problem getting my VL to run,all i get is a try but it won't keep running.
I've removed the filter just upline from the pump at the front of the tank. And connected a
clear hose into a can, just to test the pump.So when i turn the key on i get fuel pumping
for about 3 seconds, the same noise as always on first startup, then nothing.
I was expecting it to just pump the tank dry.Or am i missing something.
Is the pump buggered?

most VLs have 2 pumps, 1 in the tank and a bigger one outside, may be easier to replace the internal pump as they dont last forever, these are readily available in several brands
its posible the filter bag is blocked with muck or it might be siezing up, they often make noise if wearing out which can be heard echoing around in the tank, if its trouble with the other pump the noise will be different
when the key is turned the pump will pump for approx 7 sec then stop until the car starts then it will pump again.
engine starts then stalls?
check for air leaks between airflow meter and throttle body check all electrical connection for the ignition system check air regulator.
do a search for a diagnostic check with your ecu.
try and get a workshop manual because there are alot of different tests for the fuel system including the pumps.
Nobody wants to play with me
Easier to replace the internal one?
I can see a pump on the outside, held by 3 bolts.
So can you explain how to replace the internal one.
May be premature just yet.
As i've removed the filter, and are just rtying to pump fule thru a clear plastic hose to a can.
But pump only works for a few secondsthen stops.
colin.
i agree about getting a workshop manual and doing the tests to figure out what is wrong
it will give the procedure to replace the internal pump, assuming you have one, it seems some VLs dont
Thanks,i'll trot off to the library then,i do have one procedure i can try first, and that is to short pin 37 and 87 on the relay to see if fuel flows continuously.

vl dont need the internal pump to even run, its only a lift pump. i know this because mine when i had the car was making the god awfull noise that thay do. i unpluged it and the car still ran fine.....
and it sounds like the fuel system on you car is opreating as designed, as jatsvl said check for air leaks un the bonnit and get a book
Ok i worked on it all day and have now got pumps working.Only i've forgotten which hose connects were.
And the pin numbers (on the relay)were 30 and 87,this keeps the pump on continuously which is what i wanted to check.
The lower pipe in the engine bay is the fuel under pressure, does it go to the regulator first or the pipe that goes to the back of the injector rail(top pipe).

Buy myself a Manual?Know a good one?Please don't suggest Haynes.
Went to the library this morning to read up on these pumps.
And i wanted to short 2 pins on the relay to supply power to the pumps continuously while the motor is stopped, just to see it was capable of flowing fuel.
This is what manual said
Chapter 4-3,,,22 have an assistant turn on the fuel pumps for 30 seconds by connecting a jumper wire across the proper two terminals.
That's all,seriously,what a joke!!
No mention were these terminals are,nothing!--"proper"ha ha
Also i wanted to replace the bonnet cable about a month ago,but getting the lever assembly off was a problem, and it's in a difficult position to see, down beside the accelerator. It has to be levered apparently but is made of brittle plastic.
The manual simply states "remove lever assembly"or some such rubbish.
I say if we have to rely on a manual then we may as well close these forums down
cheers
colin.
elleries manual isnt bad but has many mistakes which probably apply to earlier commodores
So harry3,have you got an answer on the fuel problem, does the fuel enter at the regulator or exit there?
Sorry i don't have much confidence in manuals, are there any other Holden discussion groups?
cheers

Actually i have got it now,i went to carpoint and viewed about 30 VL under-bonnet pics
before one clearly showed, now wait for this,in typical GM logic, the lower hose (pressure)from tank goes to the highest injector rail inlet pipe fitting and the higher of the pipes (2 inches higher)from the tank goes to the lower fitting on the engine(return).

Is the car running now?
Yes,i replaced the relay.I was able to get the pump working by shorting across the pins 30@87 under the relay, but on its own wouldn't work on its own.
So after getting it pumping it was just a matter of connecting the hoses up correctly to the engine.
And these forums couldn't even help out there.shame! The best advise was buy a manual,ha ha
