Ive been told that cam drive belts for the 6 cyl engine can be left longer than recommended as their construction has improved a lot since the VL came out in 1986
so how many KMs are safe before replacing it?
apparently its a big job to get the belt cover off to inspect the belt, so most mechanics put a new one on then
well its normally 100,00km
you find this is still reckomended on newer cars,
my mums daewoo which is 05 says do it at 100,000
and my dads old rex (my01) was due at 100,000
its bassically like a power steer belt or alternator, it can snap at anytime
you could prob get more then 100,000 but its up to you,
risk getting stuck out nowhere or get it done

my parents camry says 150,000 I do believe.
the vl has a recommendation of 95,000kms or 57mths with the better belts available it allows you a bit of extra time I wouldn't go past 110,000kms thou, prevention is better than cure.
Nobody wants to play with me
it needs much dismantling before a mechanic can look at it, getting the cover off isnt easy
top cover removal is quite simple for a basic inspection if there is any real wear or cracks you would see them with just the top cover off and rotating the engine, a thourogh inspection can only be complete when the belt is removed at which point for $15 dollars you would replace it.

thank somebody that yo udon't own a WRX, i hear those cambelts take a whole day to do

yep sucks big time, along with those quad cam mitsi's, people say they can tell a cambelts condition by looking at it, I reckon thats a load of c**p, Its like people being able to crack detect blocks with their eyes. if your cambelt is cracked or has any signs of any deformity DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR.
EDIT, a 3L VL would be one of the easiest to do. Skylines with the twin cam motor is easy as too, so SOHC is gonna be easy as.
100,000kms usally, at work we do them at about 80,000kms to be on the safe side![]()
it is recommended the rb30 is done at 95,000kms doing it at 80,000 would make it almost 1 year before it is due?? it is ok to go 10,000 over the belt doesn't just break at 95,000kms there is some tolerance.
Imahoon most mechanics place a sticker under the bonnet (timing cover, inner guard) which tells you when, where and by who it was done. also I wouldn't be to concerned its a toyota they are almost bulletproof!
on inspecting a timing belt you would be looking for OBVIOUS signs of wear and tear that is why each manufacturer has recommended time to replace because there is wear and tear that you cannot see and eventually it will strip a tooth or snap!
Nobody wants to play with me
it only needs half the teeth to still work fine
P.S. I replaced my timing belt, radiator... and head... lol
