    Default Windscreen wiper dashboard cluster

In regards to this little item, on my 1988 VL Commodore poverty-pack:

Does anyone have a wiring diagram or can otherwise inform me of the purpose of each one of these wires?

Reason I am asking is the clip appears to have failed and if I am unable to fix it I will be cutting all the wires and installing a new one.

    Cheers!
It's as if society expects me to act like a cockmongler when I'm driving the Commodore. People always look at me weird when I go the speed limit, or indicate for more than 2.5 clicks or accelerate moderately off the lights... wtf

if your just going to cut the wires and put another plug on it why do you need to know what they are for?

just make sure your connecting the same colours together

if the clip has "failed" (I assume you mean broken off) why not just tape the plug in? or silicon it (which will still allow you to later remove it)

I thought, since I was getting into the dash anyway, I would wire up a simple button array for the wipers and rear demister as both of the satellite arrays are malfunctioning and I am not fond of the standard buttons.

That is what I need the diagrams for. I have a good understanding of circuits but I cannot work safely if I do not know what wire goes where.

And by failed I mean that for whatever reason there is absolutely no current being received at the wiper buttons themselves. This may be a fault of the array itself, however I have decided to remove the whole lot as they have caused me significant trouble lately.

Not on hand, no. But I can get one if it has the relevant data.

just FYI, I pulled apart a spare switch panel thingo I have here (without breaking anything) and its all pretty straight forward to work out which wires are for which buttons.

the buttons switch to ground, not sure if that helps you at all.

does the windscreen leak on the drivers side?
the black box in front of your bonnet release handle is the wiper module, does it get wet?
wiper switches do stuff up you could just replace it.

I finally got around to actually checking each circuit with a volt tester properly. The backlight works, but none of the windscreen wiper circuits do (the tester hooked directly to each bare wire + the ground wire), nor the demister circuit. The fuses were in good order.

I get the feeling the problem is staring me in the face and I'll likely feel like a right pillock afterwards, but is there anything else that could cause this?

I've also been trawling around U-Pull-It looking for a new cluster but they seem to be in short supply. I guess they are a weak point?

No, I haven't tried it. I'll have a look tomorrow.

I went to the 'Lizbuff one. Lonsdale is a bit out of my reach since I have to borrow someone else's car whenever I want to get big parts. I might just grab a few hand tools and jump on the train down there though. These clusters aren't especially large.

Yeah a pic would help. Found the ECU and a what appears to be a fusebox of some description under the steering column though.

As for Lonsdale U-Pull-It... I went there this morning. Drove from Salisbury to Hallett Cove and didn't find a single wiper cluster but I did get one defrost cluster. Ended up getting what I needed from a place in Salisbury by the RAAF base.

The wiper / defrost buttons didn't work (again) but the backlights for both clusters did, exactly the same as the old ones. Makes me wish I hadn't torn them apart to check the circuits. :/

I've managed to get the unit unscrewed and disconnected, but there doesn't seem to be any way to test its functionality. Should I just buy another one and test it?

It's a real pain in the arse to get too, to. I'm not exactly flexible, nor do I take well to being upside down sprawled across the front seats with a handbrake up my clacker.

EDIT: I plugged it back in and lo-and-behold the wipers worked.... sort of. I would jiggle the box and then use the circuit tester on the old dash cluster and I would get intermittent functionality. Jiggle it again and it would work for a little bit more before stopping.

I'll go to the wreckers on the weekend and buy a new box. Hopefully its just the box and not the conduits that are faulty. Either way thanks for the help.

EDIT2: Does this box operate the rear demister too? Because as I've mentioned it seems to be having the same issues as the wipers.
