Going insane !!! Plz help.

hey guys,

just recently bought a vl with 100,000 legit kms.

BUT

my RB30 non turbo is making a ticking noise on idle and when i rev the ticking gets faster. can someone plz, plz help me solve this problem because the sound is haunting me in my sleep.

yes i know this question has been asked many times, but all the questions i have seen that relate to my topic, the VL's have done 200,000 and above kms. so plz guys im open to any suggestions, or is the RB30 just a noisy ticking engine in general?

get a screwdriver and put it to each injector and listen through it .... could be a dirty injector and cylinders not firing

how could it be the lifters? this car has been serviced and had oil changes like no tmorrow lolz, and it was serviced by mobil. and its only done 100,000kms so im pretty sure its not the lifters.

so u think i should go to a mechanic and ask him/her to clean my injectors and put thinnner oil in?

no just try what i said first mate, and see if all injectors make a ticking noise through the screwdriver champ

if it increases with revs ill be leaning towards lifters,
next oil change try some nylon lifter free in the engine and see if i quitens down
if so then clean them like vl 5speed posted the link too

maybe an exhaust leak.
have you checked the manifold studs and nuts? they do come loose, also the rear exhaust manifold studs commonly break
also check the connection where the manfold joins the exhuast pipe.

jatsvl ill check that today b4 i do anything costly, like changing the lifters.

does sound louder when the camera was on the exhaust side,

with it running just put your hand around all the edges you can safely reach on the manifold and feel for exhaust gas being blown out

as jats said look towards the rear first as cylinder 6 exhaust port seems to snapp bolts commonly
then check over all bolts with a spanner to see if some have snapped (when the cars cool )


last manifold i did i had to do it 3 times,
the factory manifold had warped so it just kept blowing the gasket out, so i chucked my spare extractors on and solved the prob
make sure the manifold is straight before you refit it

my bad,
only if it does have a snapped stud you will have to remove the manifold to get the studs drilled out

no need to remove it to check

orite i did the screwdriver to the injector trick, all injecters are making the ticking sound so im 90% sure that its them, i put a bottle of nulon injector cleaner in my petrol 3 days ago aswell as $30 worth of 98 octane mobil petrol. so im on just under half a tank. should the injector cleaner have worked by now?

the injectors are ment to tick, this is them opening and closing releasing the fuel

yeah it does increase with the revs, when i get an oil change and put some engine oil flush and some lifter free stuff in there ill tell ya how i went
