    Default vl executive preferred oil.

    hey guys,

ive read that valvoline 20w50 is the best motor oil for a 1987 vl executive.

i just wanted to know what oil all other vl commodore owners are putting in there cars.

ATM the previous owners mechanic put 15w40 in the engine.......

    gutta change my oil thursday.

I use valvoline because its cheap, the widest SAE range is best, I think and do change it every 6 months if not earlier, with a new filter

I wouldnt use a straight 50 oil as not all parts in the engine would be worn equally

    oil suitable for older engines.
20/50 viscosity is perfect, run my first vl on it for 5 years changing every 5000-6000 kms
keep it clean and not gummy.
running the same in my vl now. No issues what-so-ever

    1st choice - 20w50 valvoline XLD classic,
    then in no particular order.
    20w50 valvoline XLD plus,
    20w50 valvoline XLD premium,
all very good oils with the recommended viscosity.

YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! Lol.

The lads are on the money - although I will add that the 15w40 your mechanic put in isn't going to be a bad thing, especially on a one off. But with older higher Km motors, def go for a 20w50... and make it a Valvoline (although others will argue!)

Use the thinest oil you can that will hold your oil pressure (no rattles) I would expect 15/40 to be fine in a rb30 with low ks. Heavy oils just add drag and waste power/economy no use to use them unless you have to

Agreed. If your only round the 100k mark, then 15w40 would be ideal.

alright so i think im gunna go with the 20w50 and see how that works out, then try 15w40 again after about 6,000kms.

    thanks for your help guys

what does that have to do with what grade oil it takes ?? just because its a 6 doesnt mean it takes thicker oil. for example a BA falcon takes magnatec 10w-30 even thinner again

I've been using Penrite 20-60 in my vl for 7 years now changing the oil and filter every 5000. It's pretty expensive s*** and some people say it's excessive but I figure grease and oil are cheaper than parts. What do you guys think about that grade? Been using it since it had 170000 now done 240000 and no probs, singing like a bird.
