AMP Gauge Question

Hey All

Just got giving an amp gauge for nothin, my mate said it never worked in his ride, but i wanna make sure...

what type of wire should i be using, my guess is a thicker wire then other gauges, but how many volts should it be able to take..

Any where abouts would i connect it up in my VL ? He lost the instructions awhile ago.. so fudge..
