304 vl trimatic no gears/any advice

i just got it, no gears. before i go dropping the box has any one got any ideas on what it could be. its got plenty of fluid thats all i know about autos.the traumatics dont have any elecs on them do they,and could i just whack a v8 tri out of somthing older in the vl.i want to get her going a.s.a.p and ive got a t700 i was thinking maybe adapter plate and lock up switch has anyone been there?

is the selector ratching as you change gears and making the gearbox change?
the linkage might have snapped of or poped off under the car

check under the car along the left or right side of the box
should be a system of levers and what not
