    Default vin number

sorry if this isnt exactly the correct post but wasnt really too sure where else to go...

my dad seen on tv how you could go online and search for the history of your car and what its done and who's done what etc....

i went to search for it but couldn't as i cant seem to find the vin number..

    i own a vl calais 1986 model.

i searched near all the door locks on the frame thing as it said on a site and also everywhere under the hood. i did notice that there had been some sort of a tin plate like what are used for the engine numbers and etc had been pulled off. it was on the drivers side under the hood on the shocker thing...

    if you understand....

plz tell if there is anyway i can find my vin. it was registered not long ago so it would have to have it somewhere??

i have a pink slip that only has a 14 character vin/chassis/frame id

    help??

In Queensland on pre 89 cars the vin wasn't a big deal on the rego slip and cars had a 14 digit vin and this was mainly a number used by the manufacturer on the assembly line and to keep a track of for servicing .The Main roads dept up here used the engine number to record any particular car.....they might record it if you put it on the transfer or note that there wasn't one recorded if it was missing but it wasn't a big deal then like it is now. This left the door open for car thieves and they exploited it.
It was after 89 that the number of vin digits increased to 17 and it was the main number that designated the car now and not the engine (although it was still recorded)which could be easily swapped. After this time any new car had to have a vin to be registered and if one wasn't there it was given a sarogate number and blue plated with the number on the car somewhere.
Queensland Transport dept can do a search using the rego number on any particular car to find out its history from their records from documents in archives but it costs the applicant somewhere from 35-100 depending on how extensive you want them to go and its called the Freedom of Information dept and sometimes the information isn't complete say if the car was deregistered at anytime.Maybe there are similar departments in other states.
